The huge scale of Islamic extremism facing the UK is once again highlighted in numbers, with 304 terrorism-related arrests made in the year-ending March 2017, a record high.
This is the highest level since records began following 9/11 and exposes just how big the challenge now is for security services to keep the public safe.

These figures relate to the period before the arrests made following the Manchester bomb attack and London Bridge attack.

There is no doubt that jihadi terrorism is becoming a bigger issue in Britain.

Britain's security services are considered among the world's best but are struggling to monitor the flood of potential terrorists returning from Syria and Iraq.

The scale of the threat facing the country has been laid bare with figures showing police and MI5 are involved in 500 investigations involving 3,000 individuals at any one time.

There are also 20,000 former 'subjects of interest' whose risk must be kept under review.

The flood of potential terrorists returning from Syria and Iraq is a problem of the govermnent's own making. Anyone going, should have been told they would be jailed on return. How could allowing trained terrorists back in, not be seen as exremely risky?

How many released without charge? Seems to be the vast majority to me. Always a lot of noise in the days afterwards about raids and half a dozen people arrested and then a byline a couple of days later saying they're no longer being questioned.

Sadly, we're always playing catch up on this and I think there's a political impetus to be seen to be doing something, so overreacting to every bit of info and making a show of multiple raids that don't actually amount to much.
