Instead of Northern Ireland getting special status to the EU market, Ireland should get special status to the UK market imo

How many times did Eire vote to leave?  Defo twice, thrice maybe?

Eire wanted out but would they still?
Report David Fishwick Minibus Sales • June 13, 2017 12:39 AM BST
how about they get a re-unification referendum?

still, after 800 years of oppression, i suppose their seat round the brexit table will be a comfy one Laugh

We voted against Maastricht and Nice twice,we were the ones who saw what was coming down the road, but our Government put the fear of God into the farmers who on the second vote agreed to us selling ourselves to the big Monster that is Europe.
Report Foinavon • June 13, 2017 6:44 PM BST
We were sold down the river by first Ted Heath then Howe, Lawson Hesseltine K. Clarke and Major.
At least Norman Lamont (God bless him) kept us out of the ERM after Black Wednesday.

Ireland didn't vote to leave the EU. Spend a lot of time there both work and pleasure - probably want of the most pro-EU places you could possibly be

Exactly Wallflower workrider is not representative of Eire thankfully.

Ireland should go over to Europe and tell them they are leaving to join the UK unless Europe pay them back the 80 billion they were forced to pay the bond holders by Europe when the banks went bust. Its a game of poker and Ireland have a poker of aces if they play on the side of UK, and the UK could get a better deal if Europe thought that the EU was about to break up.Cool

We'll wait to see how the UK get on with their experiment. Happy

Why thankfully ? He just has a view so why the sarcasm ? If I recall it was a Cameron government who came to Ireland's rescue when they had a financial collapse. Found billions to bail the Irish out while in Britain we were experiencing austerity. As for Europe and who runs it and how it's run I suspect most remainers no nothing of the organisation. While those reading this have the Benifit of Google i bet a high percentage do not no who their MEP is ! The court is out for me regarding Tommy Robinson, however watch his interviews of people in the crowd at a remain rally.......funny as fu ck !!!!

Irelands membership of the EU is fairly unimportant in comparison to its links to the UK.
This connection is vital to Ireland and its economy would collapse without it.
If Ireland left the EU it would be fine, but only if it doesn't lose its historical connection to the UK.
Why ? Because Ireland has never been a country independent from Britain, and haven't been so for the last 100 years after 'independence' , they retained the rights of British citizens to live and work in Britain .
and after 'independence' many thousands more came to Britain just for that reason, the Irish economy would have collapsed without this arrangement.
This is something that will not change and cannot be replicated by the EU.

Agree a bit like the Scottish, they need us far more than we need them...........but don't tell Nicola Laugh

Ireland never voted to leave the union if Great Britain and Ireland.
And in reality they neve did leave it.
Report lfc1971 • June 15, 2017 8:09 AM BST
If Ireland was to leave the EU what would change for them? nothing very much.
They are on the sidelines and not European in any real sense.
However should they lose the historical link, and all the rights that Britain gives them it would be disasterous for Ireland and its people..
Are they thankful ? I don't know .
Report lfc1971 • June 15, 2017 8:11 AM BST
They don't have to be thankful, but they should be honest.
Report lfc1971 • June 15, 2017 8:23 AM BST
You see after Irish independence many Irish people came to live and work in Britain. They coukd go to school and college and university. Every  part of British life was open to them and they were involved in that life and could rise to the highest levels of our society , and did so.
That will never happen in any other country in Europe.

We gave them the vote here but I don't think it's reciprocated for British citizens there Crazy
Report workrider • June 15, 2017 10:30 AM BST
So according to you we didn't vote to stop the Masstricht and Nice agreement,I think you should go back and have a good look my son.

It is Irish are de facto British citizens, and vice versa.

As stated in this thread, Ireland never voted for "independence" and in the true sense of the word never have been. And certainly never will be if they continue in EU.

I think some of you guys should read "The Rotten Heart of Europe" By Bernard Connolly.
Mr Connolly was a senior economist at Brussels and was suspended from his job after writing this book. If you really want to know what the aims and objectives of the EU are and the price that Ireland paid to remain in the ERM and eventually join the euro, then read on.
