Not sure why Ruth is more worried about the 10 DUP MPs in parliaments rather than the 100's Tory MPs on this subject.

utter bollocks it was a similar vote on either side with a large number abstaining.
The big difference being that while those Tories were against same sex marriage not many hold the extreme views that the DUP do on all gay rights issues.

It looks like May isn't the only one who has looked to the DUP for help:

http://www.irishnews.com/news/2015/09/02/news/hillary-clinton-emails-labour-sought-dup-election-pact-248668/

Hillary Clinton emails: Labour sought DUP election pact

LABOUR sought support from the DUP in a bid to form a government following the Westminster election in 2010.

Newly released emails to Hillary Clinton when she was US secretary of state show the Labour Party tried to win support from the Democratic Unionists.

In a previously confidential briefing paper, US officials said then Labour leader Gordon Brown "is doing whatever he can to hold on to power".

They said Northern Ireland secretary Shaun Woodward was involved in attempts to build support for Labour following the election.

The email read: "Shaun, for his part, is working on an economic package for Northern Ireland to win support from the DUP and other parties for Labour – a package to be proposed in the Queen's Speech."

However, the Conservatives formed a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats.

In later emails Ms Clinton was repeatedly warned by a key confidant that the coalition would rapidly fall apart in the wake of the general election.

Sidney Blumenthal, an unofficial adviser to Ms Clinton, delivered a withering assessment of the new government, describing foreign secretary William Hague as "disingenuous" and accusing deputy prime minister Nick Clegg of "inbred arrogance".

The correspondence shows she responded enthusiastically, saying she had shared the emails with her husband, Bill – the former president – who thought they were "brilliant", adding: "Keep 'em coming when you can."

Gordon Brown wins crucial 42 day vote thanks to Ulster MPs

Just nine votes saved the Prime Minister from an embarrassing defeat as he survived a backbench rebellion at the last minute.
Mr Brown had staked his authority on winning the vote, personally calling dozens of Labour MPs to persuade them to back increasing the time limit that terror suspects can be held without charge.
But his victory - which means Britain now has the toughest anti-terror laws in the Western world - ultimately depended on the support of the MPs from the Democratic Unionist Party.
Mr Brown was accused of doing backroom deals with the Ulster MPs in order to save his own skin and indulging in "pork barrel politics".
If the nine DUP MPs had voted against the controversial legislation, which will see the detention limit without charge raised from 28 to 42 days, it would have been defeated. If they had abstained it would have required the casting vote of the Speaker to pass the legislation.

The narrowness of Mr Brown's victory calls into question the government's mandate for introducing such a controversial law. However, recent opinion polls had indicated that the public was overwhelmingly in favour of the legislation.
Details of what the DUP had secured for voting with the Government have begun to emerge.
Householders in Northern Ireland were due to begin paying water rates at levels equivalent to those in the rest of the UK from 2010, rising from £160 next year to £250. The DUP have now won an agreement that the £200 million this will raise annually will be spent on taxpayers in Northern Ireland.
In addition, Shaun Woodward, the Northern Ireland Secretary, assured the DUP that the Government had no plans to end the ban on abortion in the province. Abortion has never been legal in Northern Ireland, and women and girls seeking a termination often travel to the England for the procedure.
Thirty six Labour MPs voted against the Government and the Government majority of 65 was reduced to just nine, with 315 MPs in favour and 306 against. Ann Widdecombe, the former minister, was the only Tory MP to vote with the Government.
Willie McCrea, a senior DUP MP, defended the party's decision to back the Government.
"As far as we are concerned in the Democratic Unionist Party we decided on an issue of principle on national security," he said. "Without apology, the DUP and the one Ulster Unionist voted side by side together.
"Northern Ireland knows more than any other part of the UK what the ravages of terrorism can do. We could not in any way put our hands to something that would endanger the UK."
The vote was considered the biggest test of Mr Brown's year-long Premiership and he will hail the victory as one for improved British security.
Earlier in the Commons Mr Brown clashed with David Cameron over the issue. The Conservative leader said the proposals were "draconian" and "ineffective".
Mr Brown said the proposal was "not only popular" but "necessary and right."
After the vote Mr Brown was seen congratulating the Labour whips, he also kissed Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary who had been piloting the laws through the Commons.
He also thanked Lady Sylvia Hermon, the Ulster Unionist MP, who also voted with the Government.
But the raising of the detention limit from 28 to 42 days was attacked by the opposition and civil liberties groups, who had argued that they were a step too far. terror suspects in Britain can now be held for a month longer without charge than any other Western country.
Australia allows police to hold suspects for 12 days without charge.
David Davis, the shadow home secretary, said: "We won the argument, they bought the votes. It wasn't the argument that won the day it was the (Labour) whips that won.
"Gordon Brown can't be proud today."
But Tony McNulty, the Home Office Minister said: "I thought common sense would prevail.
The Prime Minister had the bravery and courage  to stick to his guns, to stick to his principles.
"Now there is a huge task to persuade all Parliamentarians in the Commons and Lords."
Austin Mitchell, the Labour MP for Grimsby, said that rather than abstaining he switched to support the Government to "save Gordon for the nation." But he added that he did it in the knowledge that he did not think the 42 days would be enacted.
Tony Lloyd, the chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party, said: "This leaves the Labour Government very much in tune with what this country wants."
A Daily Telegraph/YouGov poll showed that 69 per cent accepted the need for the 42 day detention limit for terror suspects in "exceptional circumstances."
Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader, said it was a "victory of pork barrel politics." He added that it was "a sad day for the tradition of liberty in this country."
Shami Chakrabarti, the director of civil rights group Liberty, said: "Recent years have shown how forgetting Britain's moral compass has left our country less safe; so on to the House of Lords- once more the guardian of fundamental rights."
Mr Brown and Home Office ministers spent the past few days lobbying backbench MPs. Up to 60 were threatening to rebel but a range of "sweeteners" are understood to have been offered to secure the support of several dozen MPs.
The Prime Minister personally called those who were threatening to vote against the Government  speaking to some backbenchers at length who have not spoken to Mr Brown for the past two decades.

There's only 1 thing that matters in NI politics and that is to remain part of the UK or Leave. It's all Orange and Green. We don't vote on who we think will give the best schools, hospitals etc. We vote on who is the best to secure the Union or give an All Ireland. I voted DUP, not because I like their policies but because the next best candidate would bring us closer to an All Ireland.

The DUP will remain unscathed after this Tell Dell, they have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Sinn Fein are democratically committed and the dissidents are a tiny minority and not welcome anywhere on the Island. While they still pose a threat I think 9/11 put our wee part of the World into perspective and there's not a chance of our troubles happening again. Besides, my daughter is dating a Catholic, my niece marrying one and this is from a staunchly Unionist family. While I may be slightly bigoted in my views thanks to the troubles, at least my kids are growing up in a secular society where all views are tolerated (well secular until Islam moves in.)

I do however think the DUP in power will stall things for local government. You can't blame the DUP for grasping this chance, they will use it to their advantage but Sinn Fein are squirming atm. I can't see agreement which creates a vacuum for dissidents to gain ground. The sooner we get devolved government, the better but I can't see it any time soon.
