What a waste of brave British servicemen's lives! No one will ever win in Afghanistan, Why won't they learn.

The MoD and the generals were so smug when they went in there 'it's all about hearts and minds' etc  , thought they were going to show the Americans how it is done...

Was a similar outcome in Basra from what i recall.

Lack of men, lack of equipment and lack of support from the locals, how could it fail and "let us leave without a shot being fired"....

456 Brit soldiers lives wasted!

We had no reason to be there, Blair agreed to release troops for the US intention to invade Iraq. That man should be at The Hague for cross examination by a forensic barrister instead of civil servants.

they've been fighting guys off for a thousand years. Did you really expect to win.
Russia had a go too.
About 104,000 people have been killed in the Afghanistan war since 2001. More than 31,000 of those killed have been civilians. An additional 41,000 civilians have been injured since 2001.

Inevitable.  I'm afraid I find it difficult to feel sorry for soldiers who rushed to join up once the shooting started and the videos came back of fire fights.

A total waste of time and lives.

Charlie Wilson's war is an interesting but ultimately depressing film, demonstrating that nothing has been learnt in the last 30 years.

It should have been all out to get Bin Laden and senior al Qaeda members. That's it full stop. It's all been a fcking disaster.

'Terror' is an emotion. You don't fight emotion. Absurdity! (Still used today by our hapless politicos).

There will still be enough lining up to join the army and fight more of these fake wars.

Anyhow, Helmund was never under the control of western forces, even though they told you so. Anyone vaguely familiar with Afghan history will know that the first thing you do when the enemy enters is disappear. Which they did. THen they start hitting you with guerilla warfare and you can't do feck about that. Your best bet is stay their for as long as you can and achieve the goal you wanted to achieve(example weapons sales, control over drugs or natural resources etc). Whatever the reason we invaded afghanistan for, it probably was achieved a few years ago when official negotiations with taliban started. That 456 sheeps got slaughtered in the process hardly matters.

Consider this. The British Empire had 3 wars in Afghanistan, all from the comfort of their own government in India. That's about 100-200 years ago. Today they've got you running around in london of all places! How times change.

detraveller you raise from time to time many good points but your use of the term sheep to refer to our troops is offensive. I am an ex service man although not for this country and I'm a big boy so say what you like about me, not really bothered. However my son is currently in the military and joined for his reasons, many join for the job training, some for adventure etc etc but what ever the reason they all know and accept that if a conflict comes along then they are likely to see action which they accept. I'm sure you will not change your views because of anything I say nor would I want you too but out of respect for those who've served or are serving please have a thought of your use of the word sheep.
Report cooperman • June 10, 2017 10:12 AM BST
ufcdan, well said sir. As well as the number of military killed, many more had their lives changed forever by injuries caused by IED's and to belittle these men and women is at best thoughtless.
