....how do you come to terms with the fact?
In my head and "looking through the windows of my eyes (Paul Simon)" I'm still a randy young art student"!
The reality is that, after years of agro, good living, too much sun, and the demon booze, everything fell apart.
What brings it home is, for the first time, to be the eldest, at a family wedding, by perhaps fifteen years!
Apparently age is just a number.....oh yeah...wait till you get there!

Yeah getting old is a bummer. But we aren't the first and wont be the last until they find a cure for ageing in the next 100 years or so. Of course over-population will be a problem then.
I console myself by thinking we lived at one of the best times to do so. We missed the world wars, the worst of severe poverty, slums, rationing, unemployment, terrorism (apart form one notable exception), mad drivers and over-crowded roads, over-paid football players, etc, etc. We had freedom to go outdoors and play all day without fear when kids. Build bonfires. Free milk and meals at school. Indoor toilets(!), heating, fridges, the magic of tv, politicians we could relate to, free education, earnings related, bookies with chalk boards, the atmosphere of pubs, mini skirts, smelly fingers, taking ends at footy, scooters, good music, test matches on BBC all day, pride in our country, Betfair, etc, etc. So many things we luckily missed and so many to be grateful for. Maybe that's why getting old hurts! |

Fella goes into a pub. Sees an old bloke at the bar who he hasn't seen for 25 yrs. Fella says to the old bloke, hello Charlie how old are you now. Charlie says I'm 85. Fella says blimey I'd hate to live till I'm 85. Charlie says " ye fcukin would if you were 84."

I worked out today (dont' ask why) that the year equidistant between now and world war two is 1981.
That's quite amazing. To me, the leap in society between 1945 and 1981 is huge, from 81 to now, not much, In 1981 some of us were on this forum using a zx81, portable phones were about to come online. Pasenger Jets and foreign holidays. We had Abba, Madness, The Police, and Cliff Richard. (The latter is still a banging dance act filling stadiums with his bangin' dubstep). In 1945, virtually nobody had a phone, you had black and white westerns, a holiday was a trip to someone else's allotment, Penicillin wasn't even widely available so you could die from a paper cut. And you had Glen Miller. (Who couldn't master propa dubstep stylee and so enraged killed himself, using a piece of paper) |

I was born 1952 and completely agree JC.
Forgot to mention thumbing which was a marvellous form of transport for me (used to thumb to away matches at footy from about age of 14) and thanks to all the generous people that stopped and often went out of their way to get you where you wanted. Never had a bad experience while doing it. Couldn't imagine 14 year olds doing it, or being allowed to do it, nowadays. Different times. Portable phones would have been useful but also intrusive. Computers I started late with but made a career of teaching them. Nearly had a job in 1969 but messed it up which would have been really in at the start. No regrets over that though as did other things. |

An obvious truth unfortunately that the older you get the more people you know die. Family, friends and then you.

A good investment when you reach 60 is a long black overcoat. You will need it as it's often very cold in churches,crematoriums and cemeteries. Leave it in your will as they keep well.

I have a pair of Shiny Black Shoes my daughters have Nick named them the Nigerian Church going shoes ,They have done a bit of Mileage in Churches and Graveyards over the last 15 years .

Having started to experience the odd aches and pains of "upper middle age"
 I have to agree with the above.However, although getting older sucks, it certainly beats the alternative!! |
