Unique masterpiece 'Clear Spot' but I also like the albums he made for Virgin when he was, presumably, in love

Been a fan of his for over 30 years. A unique talent.
I'd rank his records as follows : 1. Shiny Beast 2. Doc At The Radar Station 3. Trout Mask Replica (unquestionably his most 'difficult' work for my money, but some great stuff on it) 'Clear Spot' is possibly a good place to start for an 'accessible' type record. If I could single out one definitive Beefheart track it would be 'Bat Chain Puller', although 'Tropical Hot Dog Night' from the same album ('Shiny Beast') is a joy. MS: (Laughing) "Christ!.." MS: "Fast and bulbous!" CB: "That's right the Mascara Snake, fast and bulbous,... ...tight, also!" "Also a tin teardrop" MS: "Bulbous also tapered!" CB: "That's right!" |

Bat Chain Puller is a cracker. Lyrics so evocative. Poetry! ![]() This live version, recorded in France, is my favourite. |

Just bought Ry Cooder's Chavez Ravine at an ace record shop on the Gillygate in York (about 4 doors away from a Betfred). Shop owner who was a book of knowledge told me Ry Cooder was in the Magic Band for Safe as Milk but the Captain realised he was a precocious talent and punted him in a Mark E Smith stylee.

Pumpkins span the hills
With orange crayola patches. Green inflated trees Balloon up into marshmallow soot That walks away in faulty circles, Caught in grey blisters With twinkling lights and green sashes Uuh Pulled by rubber dolphins with gold yawning mouths That blister and break in agony There's only one man who can compose lyrics like that. |

"How would you like to be, the lucky girl, the lucky one, to BE the monster tonight?"
I hardly need add that "everything's wrong at the same time as right". . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0uqyjGuxyA |
