) young schoolboy i remember every other house had a Conservative,Labour, or Liberal poster stuck in the window.Fast forward to today's "modern Britain" and having just returned from walking my dog i didn't spot a single poster..not one.I reckon people are afraid to display their allegiance in case they get there windows smashed to smithereens..nice tolerant country we live in eh!

People also had signs in the window saying No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish. Fast forward to today's "modern Britain" and having just returned from walking my dog I didn't spot a single poster.. not one.. nice tolerant country we live in eh!

I have never spotted any such posters, did the Irish people come to live and work in England in their thousands in the 60s, and earlier, and later,
where did they all live? I don't know. |

Used to drive past the Galtymore in County Kilburn on a Saturday night/ Sunday Morning. Never a time when the Police Wagons were present. Took your life in your hands trying to avoid running over people of the intoxicated kind. Haven't been anywhere near since the 1980s but I believe it closed down in the early 2000s.

back in the sixties, we had no glass in the windas - we propped up cardboard to keep the wind oot. fast forward noo - pvc spaceship windas.

Greetings BTF! The only posters I ever put up in my windas was "Trespassers will be savaged by the dog, survivors will be prosecuted".

Slicer I arrived in London in 1960, saw those posters fist hand, but if examined properly they made perfect sense and saved a lot of time for all concerned. I can't speak for Birmingham but in London the majority of lettings were by 'war widows' letting rooms to supplement their meagre pensions and just'get by'.
Many of the Irish Navvies, (navigators) were young single, and poorly educated. They had no social structure to their lives (family etc) so congregated in pubs after work. These widows didn't want a young strapping alcohol and testosterone man coming in after 11 pm crashing around their kitchens, breaking crockery etc looking for something to eat....or worse. The same applied to 'Blacks' who they feared because they had no knowledge of their culture. No dogs simply meant not pets shytting up my home. Lcf1971, is that more to your liking. If you want I can point towards some educational material about the 'Navvies' building B canals, railways etc helping to drive the Industrial revolution, and latterly motorways, always in the most dreadful conditions. |

That seems fair enough, I am glad you agree there is nothing wrong with someone from England deciding who to share their house with, in England .

Absolutely, I arrived in the best country in the world (imo) in 1960, I worked, paid my way, got married and had a family. I owe England everything, and still believe it's the best in the world.

Wow boxingthefox, that could have been written by my late Father! He arrived in England in 1958 from Tullamore, lived in Brixton where he met my Mum (a Dubliner) and that's where I was born. I'm one of 6 and Dad worked extremely hard and was was very successful and put us all through private education which must have cost fortunes. He too was extremely proud to be living in England and said as much often and this country gave him the life that others could only dream of back in Offaly.

Thanks, a few on here might disagree.
 . I was born 3 months before Ireland became a republic, it's official position in the world was that of a 'Free State' but sill a dominion of Great Britain with a sworn allegiance to the crown, which means I can carry whichever passport I wish, I am lawfully English and Irish,  no wonder I get so confused sometimes. |

I wish we had the ancient Minoan (Crete) system. Anyone who wanted public office and all it's rewards had to put up their own money. When election time came around they didn't vote politicians in but out!, as a result those who had invested their dosh and time to achieve office didn't easily break 'campaign' promises.

What a load of rubbish that Metro article is. Trying to clampdown on illegal immigrants. How does that relate to the 60s attitude. BTW anybody in their teens in the 60s will tell you it was the greatest decade in our history to be of that age. |

I am getting twitchy now. I may be hiring a boat and take you all back!!! Re-kindling the taste for the sea. Just got back from Guernsey. On the trip out it was 2/3 with slight swell. It was like a Saturday night - Glasgow A&E. The sea sick casualty rate was amazing. People passing out etc. got 2 and 3 goals in spurs match how am I doing? |
