Hardians Wall,near Hexham Vindolanda a roman fort,often has features of the times,Bamburgh Castle,Alnwick Castle (Harry Potter themes) and gardens, Metrocentre for the wife's shopping,Hexham races , Slaley Hall golf course,beautiful countryside,mostly unspoilt around Oterburn,etc

Lovely Part of the World Some Lovely Coast up to wards Berwick ,Seahouses a Nice little seaside Town near Bamburgh, plus While in that Area you might as well pop over to Holy Island Happy Check the Tide Times Happy

If your a Book Type there is a Massive 2nd hand Book Shop at Alnwick in what was the Old Station ,plus you Try a Drop of Alnwick rum which is Sold in most Locals there Happy

bookshop is barter books


coast has some hidden gems, bamburgh, newton by the sea, craster  and warkworth. amble is ok but wouldnt stay there. ( seahouses is popular, chip shops /amusement arcades, not  my cup of tea Grin. wouldnt go too much south of amble , druridge bay is great beach though, and some great bird watching there too.
lindisfarne ( holy island ) well worth a stay too,remember its a tidal island though so check tide times.

towards roman wall , corbridge is really nice imo, one of my fav places, nice pubs and restaurants.
hexham isnt that nice btw.

Stocksfield has plenty of swingers parties, I recall morpeth telling me some time ago.

and the a68 near belsay has a lay- by which is a popular dogging site( apparently).Grin

A cheap few days away try a hotel in Scarborough then explore Whitby, Filey, Robins Hoods Bay or other small
coastal towns if you have a few quid to spare stop in Whitby.

ha ha , mm. I remember theconversation as I mentioned my sister lived there. Sadly she died 2 years ago which resulted in me going to Durham for the funeral, and onto Stocksfield Golf Club, for the reception. Then onto my b i law's house in Stocksfield.. What a beautiful part of the world it is.

stop off in durham see the cathedral and riverbanks

up in northumberland you can stop off at northumberlandia to walk up
man made sculpture which gives interesting sea view and open cast
mine works !

lots mentioned above but get a nice day and beach at bamburgh is great,
take a boat trip from seahouses just down road from there to the farne islands

holy island is nice too if tide is right

berwick on scottish border is worth a visit too

If you don't get seasick, get a boat out to the Farne Islands.

Some fantastic seabirds in vast numbers out there - worth a visist

Look out for red squirrels around Slaley Hall.

Look out for cod around Whitby.

Northumberlandia is an outdoor sculpture near Cramlington - it looks like a lady lying on her back. Go on a weekday. It'll be obvious why when you get there.

I've never been to Hexham races before. I believe it's a lovely track and have got mates in Newcastle and Gateshead that go often so it's definitely on my list next time I'm in the North East.

I second Vindolanda, fantastic Roman excavation and some of the stuff they have found (including letters) in the visitor centre is awe inspiring.
