If by on the beat, you mean on patrol, the last time I saw one was last Fall. I was admiring myself in the mirror at the time.

Over 20 yrs ago. We haven't had a police force for that length of time. It became a call centre around the turn of the century.

I saw a male and female walking together but that is years ago.

You can bet that opinion was very popular amongst coppers pounding the beat in cold weather.

In Dublin.  Never.  I do see them at the local takeaways with the patrol car outside.  There must be a lot of crime in takeaways.

Cue the old joke about a copper asking someone to blow into a bag.

We see them quite often in York as they've recently implemented a new tactic called Project Servator (it's Latin for summat or other) whereby increased foot and mounted patrols, are reckoned to make life more difficult for the rascals who wish to operate outside the law.

They've been supplanted by "Community Support Officers", who cost less.
My daughter recently started working for the police, she takes the 999 calls. The stories are horrific.

Most of the work seems to be done on the phone, there are hardly any police stations left and most towns in this area no longer have one.
The Police themselves are overworked and we're as a society approaching lawlessness.

As for "The beat" you'd be lucky if they come in a car when you call in an emergency let alone be on the street.

1976 have just called, and they want their  thread back       most crime is solved nowadays by forensics or the public or even through social media   - police on the street wouldn't offer much  help - times have moved on

Community Support Officers are about as useful as putting up cardboard cut outs of police.
They still cost two thirds as much as using proper police.

I used to observe the kids taking pee out of them around the cathedral in Brum. Powerless to do anything but stand there and take it.
Keeping the kids entertained is about all they're good for.

Never mind a bobbby on the beat not seen a police car for a while even in Manchester for a gig seen none in 3 days
