I was on a murder trial jury.
When I went to the court for jury selection there were about 150 potential jurors for two trials. I thought i would be out of there in half an hour, and have a day off work. My name was the third name called! When I went to the front of the court the defense and prosecution asked questions (availability, knowledge of the defender). I heard the word "objection", thought I was released, and stood up to leave. They said they were asking each other was there an objection to me. There wasn't. The trial lasted into a second week. |

millions retired, millions out of work and they upset the everyday lives of working people and buisness to sit on jurys, absolute madness

As it happens, my son was also called up for jury duty, but he has a frequently demanding job, where he just can't take time out
when the pressure is on! His employers pleaded that he couldn't possibly take time out, and he is now to serve in July! |

The selection of jury members is said to be random but, from my own experience, where my fellow jurors were a bunch of scruffy despots,
and my son's partner who are all professional types, I don't believe it is random at all! |

Have we had one of these threads recently?
I got the summons 2/3 years ago. I rang the number on the letter, told them a few things about myself, and I was withdrawn from duty over the phone. Which was my intention. I think sitting in on a decent trial would be quite interesting. |

Gallivanter...I did all the Google stuff and the current court sessions but there are 9 courts and she wouldn't even say which one!
TC..when I did mine the rest of the jury were were a scruffy bunch of airheads!I was the only one wearing a suit! Anyway the case was over yesterday afternoon, and it was a murder case. . http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/crime/drug-dealer-murdered-leeds-man-24-robbed-him-as-he-lay-dead-then-came-back-to-steal-more-1-8547688 |

My dad was called for service a few months ago but they called him a few weeks before he had to go to say he was no longer needed. On one hand I'd like to do it but on the other hand I'd find it really difficult to sit quietly for hours on end. My stomach thinks it's amusing to start doing exaggerated digestion noises in such situations. My exams were a nightmare.

Only 3 or 4 jurors take an interest in the case and the rest go along with their thoughts.
That was my experience both times I was chosen. Sheriffs summing up the most influencing part of the proceedings. |

My stomach is similar but I find drinking helps. When i did it i went to the pub at lunchtime and spent the rest of the afternoon trying to stay awake.

Done 3 lots of jury service over the years. Sat on about 8 or 9 cases, some serious offences, child abuse, gbh, robbery.
As has been said, some don't take much interest and go with the flow. Found it a heavy experience, and unfortunately we found one defendant not guilty, but after we gave the verdict there were things said from the gallery which could have made us give a different verdict. If only the prosecution had called a witness we all knew had the clue we were looking for. The witness in question would have sealed it for us. |

Do jurors take notes or are you expected to remember everything that has been said?
|
|
By:
We were given paper and biros to take notes. My last jury duty was 4 years ago, probably still do.
