Fantastic place. One of the most spectacular Cities in Europe. People are friendly, it's easy to get around, lots of good pubs and restauarants, great architecture, good atmosphere, reasonably cheap, and usually hot and sunny! The spa baths are very popular and the view from the top of Castle Hill is stunning, especially at night! There are two major museums up there too.

Ruin pubs are the way to go.

Great city, used to go once a month.
Don't go lapdancing unless you want to wake up in a bath of ice minus a kidney.
But as I have come to realise, you only need one anyway.

Sounds like an old wives' tale to me. I've been going there for over 25 years, and I've never heard of anything like that.

Was there 15 years ago (having my dental implants!). Really nice place, the thermal baths are a must visit, and the old town (Buda) is one place you must also visit. The white stone building overlooking Pest. so full of history that place.. stand on the spot where Hitler& co stood surveying Pest below. There's a wartime museum up there too, well worth a look. In the city centre, a street named Andrassy iirc, there's the Terror museum. This building housed the former communist police dept, where lots of political prisoners were kept for interrogation, and torture. If you like that sort of thing of course?
Nightlife?.. didn't see any myself, but those at my hotel said there's lots going on in the city at night, but beware of the usual.. !
One of the cleanest cities I've ever been to.. it's spotless.
Would like to revisit someday, but hopefully not spending half the time at the dentists.

I am also going at the end of the month though not with Tallywagger thank God!

Anyone care to reccommend and bars or restaurants by name?

Any more info on the spa's please?

Gutted you couldn't join us, Whisperingdeath Wink

I will report back on my return.

We have booked a restaurant suggested by a friend called KonyvBar and Restaurant. The Trip Advisor reviews look good.

Have a few other things booked including foodie walking tour, segway city tour (could be carnage) and night river/dinner cruise.

Will try and get to the spa's at some stage.

The big hotels seem to have cashed in a lot on the spa thing now, for an authentic old school single sex experience you cant beat the Rudas Baths just over the chain bridge in Buda.

More upmarket is the spa at the nearby Gellert hotel

Beautiful city

Pest - Shoes on the Danube Memorial
Buda - St Mathias Church (good views from the top of the tower)
Buda - Fisherman's Bastion (right by the church and good views of the Parliament building etc across the river)

You could try the underground Labyrinth (Labirintus) - Dracula's Chamber (Buda side), quite good for a small entrance fee (Dracula/Vlad the Impaler was supposed to have been imprisoned there) - it claims to be Europe's 8th most visited tourist attraction Laugh

You'll probably go past Groupama Arena (Ferencvaros' home ground) on the way in from the airport
Report Tallywagger. May 5, 2017 7:08 PM BST
Cheers for that, David.

Tipping is a bit different there, the culture isn't really to just leave money on table and walk away which is apparently rude, it's more you tell the person how much you'll tip at the time you pay. A ruin pub like Szimpla Kert is worth a visit even for a couple if you're not a booze hound, to see what it's like.
