In my old job I occasionally took old age pensioners to these beautiful old Victorian refurbished houses and dropped them off after emptying their old house in a removal. One old fella got a room and a bathroom coming from a huge mansion. Downsizing. he told us how much he was paying weekly and you just immediately knew it was a rip off.
If you had the money, you should think about just buying a house at 75,000- 100,000 up north and hiring two people to look after you. it would be cheaper. You sometimes see this in an old film. a rich woman with a companion.

sad indictment of our society really. go to naples. go see how many old peoples homes they have. none. nonna's still at home cooking meatballs and spaghetti for the whole family. (i made that up but it's probably accurate)
My mother is in a nursing home. Cost is about €900 a week.
She can not stand or walk. She has to be lifted into and out of chairs with a hoist.
Old people need care. The night staff have to check them constantly.
The nursing home has about 20 staff for 50 patients, kitchen staff, cleaning staff, medical staff.

Now that we are out of the EU we should make a killing out of it, just like the Swiss.
I moved back from Spain to be carer for my Mum, it was a grand a week for dreadful agency staff who she hated. Such uncaring nasty people, one of them was OK but the rest were very uncaring. I had a pager in case Mum needed me. I ended up changing her, cooking all her meals etc and although Mum always said she was sorry that I had to go through that but she looked after 6 kids and it the was the very least I could do. Miss Mum every single day 
Not right that councils will take properties off those who have bought them, but provide free places in the same care homes for those who haven't. Must be a fairer way.
Indeed, it seems the more you have the more is taken back when you get old.

It's not right saddo, but Jack is right it's only going to get worse. My nan was wealthy and ended up in a home. Recall she got gangrene and had to have her leg amputated or she would die. Her quality of life was already dire so she refused and made sure her children got the rest of her cash rather than the state. In her position I would certainly do the same. I think it's wrong spending billions keeping old people with advanced dementia or alzheimers alive myself.
Those people who have made provision for their old ages, usually through owning their own house, end up paying twice.
Once for themselves and once for other people i.e. 50% of the amount I pay in council tax goes to the care homes.
That it seems to be very much a UK issue does point to the relationships within families, children moving away from home towns for work etc.

Just face it, the government sooner than later would rather prefer a 50% capital gains tax on all property sales.
Why would a rancid bedsit in the heart of london go for a million, without the taxman getting his paws on it.

Those that never had the money more than likely lived an insecure life under the yoke, being pushed and pulled around and effectly largley by all aspects of ideology.
When you got nowt you are everyone's lackie and punished like no other.
Its no fun scratching around trying to survive in what should be the best years of your life.
If somebody builds up a nest egg then by definition they have kept the state and pernicious enterprise to some degree at arms length.

Fair point dusty, though I know a few people with fancy cars and plenty of disposable who rent. It's a lifestyle choice for some, spend and enjoy now, let the state worry about looking after you later. Quite how so many successive governments never saw this coming and took action is hard to comprehend.
Governments know this is a growing problem but dare not take unpopular decisions and just kick it down the road.
That highlights one of the major problems of democracy and our electoral system.
I am amazed any government makes unpopular decisions.

The torys are equity releasing the 'old dears' homex to pay for their own care.
Health care is so costly because government takes money from the sake of people's houses .
This does not ease the cost of health care for all of us, it pushes the costs up.
