I cancelled my VirginMedia package and swapped it for broadband only with reduced speed (100 Mb down to 50 Mb) - £30/month.
Best thing I ever done. Its all you need.

BT won't put fibre in our block because not enough people have asked for it.. but it's been put in
the block of private flats over the road.
Report TheChaser • April 19, 2017 3:17 PM BST
Breeding can you not pick up a signal from over the road or get a very long cable

If a mate stays in the block just use his/her router and split the bills

I'm with Virmin, and was paying £84 a month for phone (anytime calls), b/band and xl tv package. Phoned them saying I wanted to ditch the tv package altogether, and they offered me basic (freeview type?) tv package for £48 (as well as the phone and b/band). I accepted this, and a few days later they phoned me and offered to reinstate my tv package to xl for another 2 quid a month. Sort of happy with that, saving £408 a year.
Report Breedingmad • April 19, 2017 3:21 PM BST

Report GoOnThen • April 19, 2017 3:28 PM BST
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm paying £92 per month for XL TV, Sky Sports, 100mb BB and landline. Someone on Mse got them down to £18 per month for 100mb BB without a landline. That would do me.
Report Platini • April 19, 2017 4:22 PM BST
johnizere, you don't need to pay for the phone line anymore. they were forced to end that scam a while ago. ditch the phone line and save a few quid.

I would never use Virgin ever again. A few years ago, I moved house, to a place with no cable, so I couldn't have Virgin even if I wanted to. They collected my TV box the day before my month was up, then discontinued my broadband address without warning - which was a REAL pain.
I sent letters to everyone I could find who was high up at Virgin, but it got me nowhere, except them telling me I should have had a month's warning.
Very pricey and a dreadful company.
Report TheChaser • April 19, 2017 10:44 PM BST
They came and collected a box ? Never heard of that
Report johnizere • April 19, 2017 10:45 PM BST
The problem I have is that there is a very poor signal for mobiles of any network in my area. I have to go outside in the street or garden to find a signal lol. I get texts hours late when I go out in the car!
Home phone is more or less my only option.... other than move!

What is the best streaming box for a Samsung smart tv, apparently they run on a different OS system to android?
Report dave1357 • April 20, 2017 9:55 AM BST
you connect the box using an hdmi cable and select it using the source button on your tv remote, it doesn't matter what tv you have (as long as it has hdmi ports).

Virgin just called and offered BB only deal. 150mb for £22.95 per month.
Report mokegibboni • April 24, 2017 11:22 PM BST
The problem that I see is that even if you cut out most of the services from these companies, you still have to pay the extortionate line rental fee which is about £20 per month for Virgin Media. My deal is a bit pricey, but considering what I get, it's not too bad.

I get the 150Mb speed BB, the basic TV package which includes the ATR racing channel (Freeview doesn't include that) and the telephone landline with free calls (24/7) to other UK landlines and also includes free calls to 0870 and 0845 numbers - all for about £50 per month. I opted to pay the 12 month upfront fee for line rental to receive a discount on that which works out at about 15% compared with paying it monthly. The discount used to be double that at 30%, but they have since reduced it.
Report mokegibboni • April 26, 2017 10:32 AM BST
GoOnThen - that's interesting, because my mate has a similar deal with Virgin, but not as cheap.

He gets the slowest BB only option at 50Mb (no telly and no landline) for £30 per month. Sounds like he needs to renegotiate if what you have is correct!
Report GoOnThen • April 26, 2017 11:30 AM BST
Yes moke it looks a good deal. I haven't accepted it yet as my disconnection date is 19th May . I'll see if they can better it closer to that date. Meanwhile I've ordered a T95Z plus box and am currently getting to grips with streaming. A whole new world for me.
Report GoOnThen • May 19, 2017 5:06 PM BST
Deal finally done. Disconnection put back to 30th May. Then it's broadband only. 150mb at £22.25 pm.

Be careful about your landline number.

In some cases the number cannot be transferred so make sure that you have a guarantee that it can.  An old lady in the telegraph today transferred to EE but then wondered why she was not getting any phone calls.  EE said she was given a new number and it was not possible to give her the old number even though she had not moved.  She had to go back to her previous supplier just in order to keep her number.

Be also careful about your email account.  I was with Virgin and they did not tell me that my email account would be closed causing me a great deal of grief. Don't have email from your account provider, I am sure they do this deliberately so you stay with them.  Open something like google email now!

could someone confirm if they have landline broadband without phone ,seems like its allways 'knows a mate'

anyone tried mobile bb ,either tethering or with the dongle ?

is mobile bb being unfairly throtled/restricted by the landline cartel ?

anyone use only mobile bb at home ? the anti tethering rules appear draconian ,wtf are you supposed to do with 20+ GB on phone only or is a tablet way forward ? dont like emm myself .

were being done over by gangsters , its a pure rip off

hopefully we can incorporate into law the current and recent  eu rules on free  data roaming ,hearing they are eu acts and not laws and may not auto be made into uk law in the carry over ,this stuff needs atention, all the ripping off just forces up inflation ,if we sort it all properly we could maintain the economy and no need to increase interst rates and wages, its not rocket science.

i think that passports are stupid, if people want to come, let them.
the weather here is terrible. the food is half poisonous.
the news is repeated every fifteen minutes along with a weather report?
All we have is a good safety net, which now is beginning to fray and grow
holes in it. We are heading back into the Victorian era with education costs.
they nibble away at everything good. let them come. disillusion will follow.

anyone with money goes overseas to a country that charges more tax, like
Switzerland and France.

When did passports originate?
