All over the civilised (?) world, politicians have worked out that lying to rednecks and rural people and those easily swayed who will believe whatever they're told, works!

Unless things change, a lot, millions will suffer and die.

Times are generally tough for people and they need to blame someone. Instead of blaming the ones who actually caused a downturn in the general standard of living, various egomaniacs and potential dictators are suckering whole populations - well, 1/2 of them, which is enough to get elected.

I can't think of a good dictatorship, anywhere, ever.
Can you?

Now that was no comfort at all, was it?

We know we can do better.

And the rednecks know more than 'we'/you think.

The wisdom of Un-study........"I can't think of a good dictatorship, anywhere, ever.
Can you?".................. Below is mostly copied and pasted, as I can't waste a perfectly good Bank holiday on fools like you, get your head out of Jezza's ahole there's a good chap

Try this on for size dopey, It's called 'Benign Dictatorship'........."I am often accused of interfering in the private lives of citizens. Yes, if I did not, had I not done that, we wouldn’t be here today,” he said in 1987

Lee Kuan Yew came to power in 1959 and led Singapore to independence from Malaysia in 1965. A tiny land with no natural resources turned into a global economic powerhouse under his guidance. "I was trying to create, in a third world situation, a first world oasis,” Lee said in an interview in 2008.

The economy of modern Singapore is known as one of the freest, most innovative and business-friendly, according to the Asian Century Institute. It was ranked the second freest economy in the 2011 Index of Economic Freedom behind Hong Kong. The Global Competitiveness Index 2012-2013 ranks Singapore as the most competitive country in world.

With an average per capita GDP of just $427.9 in 1960, Singapore surged more than a hundred times to over $55,000 in 2013, making the country one of the  the planet. As for crime, forget it, they know how to deal with it, 'Bleeding Hearts like Un-study wouldn't be tolerated for a second.

Like I said get an education dopey. Oh and yes I have Lived there. HTH, but I doubt it.

A - dave is right, Singapore is Not a dictatorship. In terms of population and world standing is a poor example anyway.
Just for the sake of arguing you take an opposing stance to everything I write, to the extent of trying to prove dictatorships are a good thing!!!!

B - WHERE??? Did I ANYWHERE, say ANYTHING that can be regarded as "Bleeding heart"?
and what does this refer to?: Wouldn't last a day, 1st time, enjoys the freedoms, granted by others, and sneers at them, he is the worst kind of so called thinkers.

C - In terms of brain and its use, there isn't a single thing your brain can do which mine can't do properly.

D - This is a step too far. I suspect you can't go past C.

detraveller, I cant see what's wrong with "worrying" about Turkey, or the US or Syria or North Korea or even Rwanda come to that. It is an interest in world news and events. Not tainted by a right-wing or left-wing view, but caring about ordinary people all over the world and how unfair things can be for them. Just because of Brexit and that we live on an island shouldn't make us insular.

Surely it's eminently sensible to worry about Turkey given its position as the gateway between Europe and the Middle East.

I understand Erdogan has been quite canny in how he's been a very populist leader: there's been a huge influx from the poor in the east into Istanbul and the promise of making a better life and he's also won a lot of Syrian refugee hearts in how the Turks have been very generous in helping out their neighbours. Sadly, he's also wasted billions on white elephants in the process and run down local services and now seems to be turning his back on democracy and handing over power to anyone else.

Laugh Good man!.

For the terminally hard of thinking, a simple Google will bring up countless examples of the Benevolent Dictator. This from the 'luvvies favourite newsheet. The Guardian! just a sample.................

Lee Kuan Yew leaves a legacy of authoritarian pragmatism.

For some, Lee Kuan Yew’s death marks the passing of a ruthless tyrant. For others, it is the tireless leader’s final reward.

Of all the benevolent dictators in history, none deserve the title more than Mr Lee. For 31 years, he ruled as prime minister of Singapore, and for two more decades, he held a key position in the cabinet. Firmly entrenched, and with a free hand, Lee moulded Singapore in his own image and made it what it is today – a prosperous city-state with an intensely pragmatic people under the spell of a peculiar brand of “soft” authoritarianism.

And so he arbitrarily detained hundreds of alleged communists, chauvinists and extremists over the years using the Internal Security Act, a holdover from Singapore’s colonial past. It was detention without trial so concrete evidence wasn’t necessary. All you needed was a firm conviction that the country was under siege and the strategic brilliance to outmanoeuvre the enemy.

It was no coincidence that many of these alleged communists were Lee’s political opponents. In 1963, more than 100 opposition politicians and union leaders were deemed a threat to national security and arbitrarily detained, crippling the Barisan Sosialis, the biggest political threat to Lee’s People’s Action Party (PAP). By 1968, the PAP had won 58 out of 58 seats in parliament. The opposition never recovered and the PAP has never lost an election since.

Just a few of the Hundreds of thousands of words written about the place and the man, from all over the world.

I suppose 'YOUR' newssheet is lying just like me.Laugh

If we go by the international opinions, Singapore is far from democratic. It has been generally known as benign or benevolent dictatorship.

Where do we go from here? We are now at a cross road having to re-position the past economic model to one that has to compete with fiercer competitions from China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea, an improving Japan and rejuvenating Europe.

It would be common sense and simple logic that if all our talents so far cannot lead us to the next level of competitiveness, we will then have to mobilize our 4 millions citizens and our younger populations to give of their best through mass participation and practical knowledge application.

Many ordinary people have practical knowledge and given the right motivation in work places they will contribute beneficially.

What are the constraints? Too much controls, regulations and top-down management due to over-emphasis of the past on leaders or a few scholar talents under confucianist philosophy for political purpose.
