My first job I worked hard as a furniture mover for £15-20 a day.
When I got a minimum wage job, i was getting £50 a day, for eight hours. 250-300 weekly?
light labour at a desk. a doddle.
who turns that down ? when benefits are £70 a week and they harass you like maniacs for it.

People who earn the minimum wage usually need to set aside a good few hours of the week to add to their tattoo collection and stuff themselves with lard, so a full-time position is not always suitable.

People don't turn down a job for the dole. They do it for housing/council tax benefit. To earn enough from a minimum wage job to pay the rent in many parts of the country is impossible. That's why the Govt is always banging on about making work pay. Well with rising rents and low wage immigrants good luck with that one. |

what really surprised me was how easy the jobs are today.
i felt i was playing a game, instead of working. it was all pc typing and image manipulation/editing. i used to take two tee shirts to work for a change, i sweated so much in my first job. |

doleys generally don't live off their handouts -it wouldn't be possible ,they simply collect them as they are available to them and it helps them get their housing benefits.
most of them will have a means of getting their income usually illegal means ..drug dealing,burglary, shoplifting,busking,scamming,begging ,bootlegging - a few still work cash in hand --- you name it  if they took a job it would curtail their activities somewhat ,and in dead end jobs there is no progress to be made and in any case ,a lot of the employers will turn down idlers with a criminal conviction . |

Therein lies the problem, coach.
So many of the unemployed are unemployable. In the past, I have taken people on who weren't working, but had to interview about 10 for each 1 decent applicant (plus the same amount who didn't turn up), who were just coming so they fulfil their signing on obligation. That said, I wouldn't have trusted nearly all of them to sweep the floor, much less do any; customer facing, money taking, paperwork or telephone work. An underclass has been created in this country. The best thing that can happen is that some of them win the lottery, so they can spend some money and put it round the economy a bit. |

a far bigger underclass has been invited in and employers have no difficulty employing them although most dont speak,write english,there again employers are willing to overlook a multitude of sins for those prepared to work unsociable hrs,zero contacts,turn a blind eye to safety ,training and off course most importantly work for a pittance

i no it has i see it everyday ,i fight with it every day for work,

i'm not sure the ones coming over are underclass as such - i think it's the bad apples stand out .
i remember 20 years ago some German lady who had lived here for donkey's years saying to me that there will be a problem in England because 'the wrong families are having loads of kids' Her words not mine .  |
