1) Invade you mean? Possibly, but probably not.

I agree with Torquemada.
On No.2 The islanders voted almost 100% to remain British. Another consideration is that unlike Spain with Gibraltar the Falklands have never been in Argentina's control. In fact Argentina only became a sovereign state long after the first British settlers made their homes there. |

The possibility should be there for Britain and the Falklands to invade Argentina?

By:
^ and for Gibraltar to invade Spain, imo.

it was a mistake of the Thatcher government not to invade Argentina when she had the chance.
George Bush senior made the same mistake in Iraq |

True. All the corned beef we could eat plus probably a couple of extra world cups in the locker.

thousands of miles away? is it really part of the UK or are we stretching a point.
China's trying to claim islands today, which are nearer other countries. I understand we've colonized it, it's all brits, there is oil there. it's worth keeping. it's being propped up by sustained air flights with provisions. a lot of Scottish islands populations drift away to the mainland when they are not propped up. they are not viable. left to the sheep. can Argentina get one of those in a fair swap? |

Zorro it's a self governing island so any decision is theres.

Argentina could not invade, at least not until a Tory government repeats Mrs Thatcher's mistake of cutting the Falklands' defences.
Let me commend Binkov's Battlegrounds, a Youtube series which models hypothetical wars. In particular, on this very subject: Argentina vs United Kingdom: Falklands War 2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fg5amio4jU (it is less than 8 minutes long btw) |

An interesting series those Binkov's Battlegrounds.
Would be interested in one involving North Korea! |

Haven't Argentina prevented British oil companies from extracting oil from the area ?

2) would/could Britain retaliate in the same way they did in first time round ?
Not at all . Cannot get any planes down there anymore . Tories have ordered 2 aircraft carriers - God knows when they will be sailing- with the revolutionary concept of not actually having any aircraft on them. |
|
By:
No aircraft on them? Are you sure? Why are they called aircraft carriers then? What are they going to be used for?
|
|
By:
good question
![]() |
|
By:
Seriously, are they really not going to carry aircraft or were you exaggerating a bit?
|
|
By:
Britain has no aircraft carriers at present at all .There are 2 under construction , one i think will be ready in a year or so and the other a couple of years after that.
They have an order for planes from the US , but there are massive issues with that and they may not be delivered til 2023. Even then it is rumoured that the RAF will then be in control of the jets and the Navy will have to ask to borrow them. There has been a lot of ridicule of the situation and Tory ministers have been very unconvincing in explaining any of it |
|
By:
yeah I'd heard there was lots of problems, but they will be carrying aircraft once it's sorted surely.

We once had in 1965 Centaur, Ark Royal, Eagle, Hermes, Victorious, plus heli carriers bulwark and albion

'The Tories' !
Defence strategy takes years and years to plan. Labour are hardly renowned for willingness to commit to defence spending! |

Labour ordered two new carriers. The Tories thought about cancelling one and then decided we couldn't afford any planes (and sold off our Harriers to the Yanks, and laid off a third of the army; oh, and scrapped our remaining carrier, the Ark Royal).
Just as it was Labour who started privatising the NHS, it's the Tories who have decimated our armed forces. |
