It's not just about the wee cows.

Male cows are surplus and get put down at birth.

Kenny?

I'm not looking at that. I thought they keep the males in the fields until they look a bit handy, then kill em. Only guessing mind.

I eat very little meat. I try to make sure the animals I eat have had a decent life. Even so, I often think of turning vegan.

I eat less red meat than I used to, use more chicken. Made lemon butter chicken the other day(thighs, very cheep)it was lovely.

I've never ever eaten veal.
Never seemed right albeit I realise why it's on the market.
Lamb was something else I never ate.

Veal tastes quite similar to chicken.  Very tender and extremely delicious.

What gets me a-wondering is why the Lefty snowflake brigade aren't up in arms about the amount of bullocks which are being put down and incinerated - instead of being used to feed the starving masses.

Veal tastes quite similar to chicken... eh? Confused

Veal liver is superb, much prefer it to lamb's or pig's liver.

I wouldn't say veal tastes like chicken. It's a milder sweeter form of beef and it is absolutely lovely.

when the british were made aware of how the cows were kept in europe in the 70s and 80s to produce "white" veal, the meat rightly fell out of favour.

but that's not how the cows are treated at home.

you really should buy british rose veal, to ensure that steers have short but happy lives instead of no life at all.

Morrisons sell 'Rose' veal, that's where I buy mine.

If you are ever up North then this is a great place to buy it straight from the farm and far cheaper than you will get it for most other places.

Thanks for this thread...

I checked on line and yes they do.
Called the store, and I just picked up the last three packs, but was told they usually have it in.

Got some Marsala Wine to finish, and will do "Une sélection de légumes rôti" to accompany.....Happy

Nice to read this and nice to see progress......   Here is an interesting little exchange from a couple of years ago!! I left out some post to protect the "innocent". What I do not think has been mentioned is that the income stream from rose veal can be a lifeline and saviour for our beleagoured(?) dairy industry.

"I will assume you are serious, and stick with cattle for simplicity. You cannot have milk, (or cream or cheese) without pregnancy/birth. Birth produces calves, and in the case of female calves the process continues happily onward. In the case of male calves, they are mostly of little value, and are/were destroyed directly after birth and/or exported to the continent for veal (often in poor circumstances). UK Veal production, when properly managed avoids both of these outcomes and results in the production of what is now known as rose veal. Most butchers (and major supermarkets) can now supply this excellent and tasty meat".

"Not wishing to convert anyone but assuming you eat dairy, you almost have an obligation to help dispose of the by-product -  British Rose Veal is healthy, humane and very tasty.  You'll be helping our dairy industry and avoiding the exportation of live calves".

At an average price of around £3.50, for a typical weight of 0.375kg, it is well presented and bloody good value....

Unfortunately I didn't much enjoy it last night!

As most will know; liver shrinks in every direction, other than thickness, where it becomes double of how it started!

True it was creamy, and tasty (helped by the "Marsala Wine") but there was too much inedible.

Not really possible to cut it thinner at home, but next time I will see if beating helps (the liver that is, not Mrs Wiles)!

It's all well and good talking about "Cotoletta" but it's just the same as "Wienerschnitzel"!

The issue is from where to get it, other than on line, and paying for carriage!
