Openly gay and black. Have they forgotten the wheelchair? Shouldn't be a problem as the Daleks also have mobility issues.

spike milligan did pakistani daleks? in the seventies. he didn't get arrested.

i believe spike was the funniest man ever. humor is a form of controlled insanity.
nothing is so funny as repetition.

I used to love watching Pertwee and Tom Baker. the other doctors are just naff. the modern doctor runs about like a marathon runner and boasts like a nutter. it's even more cringe worthy than the bad effects of the seventies doctors in quarries. the Gay writers are now inserting themselves into the narrative. let's hire a African writer, and make the doctor an African dictator.

Why not an alien as a companion, or an android? get creative BBC. a gay black woman? it's SCI-FI... not eastenders.

Russell T Davies is gay but he was in charge of Dr Who during the Ecclestone/Tennant years and their sturdily heterosexual romance with Billie Piper's Rose.

Steven Moffatt has been the head Dr Who writer and producer since then, and he is straight. As an aside, he also wrote Coupling which is one of the best comedy series ever.

No idea about the next chap but he does not start till 2018 anyway.

Hmm. Maybe rather than worry about the companion, they should hire a lady showrunner.
Report Makybe_Diva April 1, 2017 12:50 PM BST
I'm really hoping they don't have a lady Doctor Who. Olivia Coleman would be good in the role but it just wouldn't seem right.

If they make the doctor a woman. I want to see a male Lara Croft.
Report bix April 1, 2017 8:06 PM BST
Why do we have to have all these PC characters in everything? We managed perfectly well without them just as we managed to enjoy films and TV programmes without swearing.

Whatever else the doctor's new assistant is she's plain and ordinary.

Very poor casting for the part, and with so many to choose from it makes you wonder why they chose her?

Report Makybe_Diva April 15, 2017 8:49 PM BST
Great actor, Slippy but I'm hoping it will be Andrew Scott.
Report wit-ham April 16, 2017 7:27 AM BST
Yes Slippy agree with you on that

Zorro i always use the same arguement about a male Lara Croft
if Dr Who or James Bond went female Along with a white Shaft
if JB went black.

But hey we may get the return of the sea -devils in those string vests now.
Report bongo April 16, 2017 10:58 AM BST
Genetically it's just as valid to say that one assistant is a bloke and the other is a white woman.
But you won't see that mentioned much.
The key things are the scripts and if the actors are any good.

the irony is with the BBC - where there should be more Blacks (in shows like Eastenders) and Asian looking folk (Corrie)  there are invariably too many WHITES Laugh

The trouble with Dr Who is these 45-minute self-contained stories can be a bit rushed so there is rarely any sense of peril. For the same reason, the fable about colonialism was lost as well.

Last night, for instance, the only scary bit came before the titles with the desperately smiling woman being killed. Once the doctor turned up, it was just gabbled exposition from the doctor: crushed up humans as fertiliser; robots misunderstood their programming so promote happiness became eliminate misery; this led to a vicious circle as deaths led to grief which led to deaths; humans want to kill robots but the doctor says they need them and also they are the indigenous inhabitants.

All these fear and/or thought-provoking plot points are lost as the writers rush through to end the story before Casualty starts. And at no time was either the doctor or the companion in any danger. Instead of drama, the doctor just tells us what's going on.

Doctor Who was brilliant tonight, really creepy Scared

David Suchet was very good.

I'm pretty sure the house they used for filming was the one used in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

^ "I'm pretty sure the house they used for filming was the one used in The Rocky Horror Picture Show."

Didn't see Dr Who tonight, but Rocky Horror Picture Show (and a Dracula film) was filmed at Oakley Court Hotel in Windsor right by the Thames. The place was empty for about 15 years when it was sometimes used as a film set, then underwent a big conversion to a hotel around 1980. Several of Team GB stayed there for the 2012 London Olympics.

Don't know if it was the same one used in Dr Who tonight, have a look at The Oakley Court in Windsor on tripadvisor and see if it was the same one.
Report Makybe_Diva May 6, 2017 9:34 PM BST
Thanks, I'll take a look.
Report Makybe_Diva May 6, 2017 9:43 PM BST
It's not the same house. The Frankenstein House is much bigger!

Report Ramruma May 7, 2017 3:24 PM BST
Again, a good premise and David Suchet excellent as the creepy landlord, but rushed through, with no sense of danger to the Doctor or Bill, a nonsensical rationale (why every 20 years and why did it matter anyway?) with a happy-ever-after ending tacked on.
Report Makybe_Diva May 7, 2017 3:26 PM BST
Yes, it would have been good to have done the story over 2 weeks.
