Was looking at that, and others yesterday.
As a kid we somehow had one, that was very inventive, but don't think we ever used it! I don't know where it came from but it was German and had a motif and a German word pressed into part of the tin. Imagine a wooden box 5"x 3.5" x 3.5" with the longest side on the ground.... The front side is open and the other end is against a vertical board 3.5"W x 15"H. At the top and far side is another box which is closed on all sides except for the base This is where it gets really clever! On the base, and inside, of the lower box is a hinged tin plate floor. The mouse goes in, and trips the mechanism that drops a tin plate door, at the front. The only way now is up a mesh tube with one way flaps. It passes the first one and has to keep going up. At the top is a hole into the box. It goes through the hole, onto the hinged tin plate base, from where it falls into the bucket placed beneath. As it does so the mechanism resets the lower box.... Absolute genius by those pesky Germans! |

Someone caught a squirrel and drowned it. The RSPCA successfully prosecuted him.

This is an interesting read and I assume is the case mentioned by the Dr.... It seems to be open to interpretation (which it shouldn't be) like many laws where an offender may be penalised, or not, dependant on those bringing the charge to court! Crazily if you caught one in your garden, it is then illegal to release it into the countryside!!!! The craziness then continues, by making the method of dispatching the animal the reason for prosecution. Drowning or bludgeoning is deemed as illegal, but a blow, or a shot to the head, is not a reason for prosecution! Bonkers!!!! On the FT range, dead squirrels were, too often, found near the bird table, where they were enjoying the bird seed. Anyone caught shooting them, would be banned from the club which, in those circumstances, I think was appropriate! |

I understood that the grey squirrel is not a protected species in this country.
That bloke was convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to a wild animal by drowning. Why shouldn't that apply to rats and mice? |

the mice died instantly, no prolonged suffering, but if mice are a pest to a famers livelihood, and he never used water in the bucket, where should he relocate them

Friend of mine had a corn store overrun with rats. Based on what a friend of his told him to do, he caught one humanely, dropped it into a metal incinerator and put a wire mesh over the top of the incinerator so the rat couldn't escape. He then poured petrol on it and set fire to it. His mate told him the rats in the corn store would hear the screaming rat and disappear which they all did within 24 hours. Telling the tale to plenty of people in his local, someone must have grassed on him as he duly received a visit from the RSPCA.
