The much maligned BBC's Storeyville series is wonderful; they cherry pick the best docs from around the world. Here is a selection, many of which have won multiple awards
ETRE ET AVOIR 2007 - Rural France Primary School documentary. Yeh I know, but... GIMME SHELTER 2007 - 1969 Rolling Stones! say no more. JFK - ROAD TO THE WHITE HOUSE 1960 2012 - Fly'ish on the wall'ish MUSCLE SHOALS - THE GREATEST RECORDING STUDIO IN THE WORLD 2014 - well obvious really. THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE CIRCUS 2016 - Weird and wonderful, and far far far better than anyone could ever expect from the title WIENER - SEXT, SCANDALS AND POLITICS - -2016 - Weirder and even wonderfuller. Wiener is documentary dynamite with a short fuse. |

I watch all the Storyville ones. Some of them are absolutely superb.
The Jinx is a must watch for anybody and is superior to Making of a Murderer. Blackfish was brutal and uncomfortable viewing about killer whales & seaworld. Cape Cod should be shown to all children (about heroin addiction amongst the young in that USA town). Great series of documentaries include the ones on the infamous double agent Kim Philby and the story of the SAS by Ben Macintyre; (whose work is utterly gripping) Louis Theroux documentaries are always intriguing and I like his laconic style of presentation. |

Storyville did a good one on an Irish Trainer a few years ago. Paul Nolan.

Don't Look Back - D. A. Pennebakeer`s documentary of Bod Dylan`s tour
of England in 1965 not just the greatest music documentary but possibly the greatest in any genre. |
|
By:
more of a 'rocumentary' though.

yes, but its about an era, and America and England. Dylan is very charismatic.
there is a scene in the taxi after a concert and some of dylans friends are being a little disparaging about Donovan and his music etc The camera cuts to Dylan looking silently out the window and then you hear him say he like`s Donavon..Dylan`s very clever and charming. |

I like Rich Hall's occasional documentaries about various aspects of American culture on BBC4. Wry and witty. They are quite informative and entertaining, without taking themselves too seriously.
