O/P bare in mind 30 minutes probable down time due to driving but that still sounds extortionate.

What would be a fair hourly for a self employed trade?

My Mechanic charged me £200 to fit a clutch, I supplied the parts. I think this was a fair price considering he works from home so no rent costs (built his workshop into his garage) but that's a minimum of £1k a week he earns.

I got charged £10 for a puncture repair the other week, thought that was a rip off considering my usual place charges £5. Took him 10 minutes but that still only works out at £60 P/H plus costs if he has a constant supply. He also had a large garage to pay for.

30mins is equal to about 2 hours in real terms with travel, insurance & paperwork, Doubtful you would get it any cheaper than £100 imo.

Fitting a new clutch is a nightmare of a job Ovalman , you have to strip half the engine out first & would easily take 2 hours hard work

I know it's a big job, think it's more than a 2 hour job, he started at 10am and phoned me at 4pm. Maybe not constant work as he has to allow for things to happen, oil to drain ect, he could be working on other things when this happens. He works on his own but it's still a decent hourly considering he's not much overheads. He's always a constant list of cars to fix.

I know he gets his parts locally so I phoned around, £100 was the cheapest so I bought them myself online for £50 delivered while he was off for XMas.

Still, £200 for 6 hours is over £30 P/H which to me sounds a decent rate.

Yes that's more like it mate, would probably take one guy more like 4 hours as a lot of it's removing & replacing engine parts without even touching the clutch, so it's a heavy job all in all

£200 probably a fair price in this day & age (£50 hour for him)

I haven't driven for a few years now & don't miss the hassles much at all

It was only 2 weeks after he replaced a 60p washer in one of the pistons, another strip down and £100

It's always handy to know a plumber, sparky or mechanic. If you do then you'll never get ripped off by them.

My wireless thermostat on my boiler wasn't picking up a signal last month. I rang the plumber up, he rearranged his jobs for the morning, and got to me within an hour, and fixed it half an hour later. He charged me a tenner (I gave him fifty).

they quoted £120 inc. vat for an hour.
then when they stay for 30 minutes you still have to pay for the hour.
what is worth £120 an hour seriously?
then they charge for parts as well.

I agree it is far too expensive, you need to know a friend etc. I would had never ordered a company that were £120 an hour, that price is for 2 men, its a 1 man job.

Its only rip off Britain when the customer doest order the correct engineer.
