The beer and wine were flowing when Thierry Baudet, the leader of a small new anti- establishment party, strolled into the cellar of Amsterdam’s Cafe Heffer to urge the flower of the city’s young conservatives to abandon their own party and join his drive to revolutionise Dutch politics.

Hoisting a large book in the air, Baudet, a dashing young intellectual, told them to sign it and become a member of his party instead. In an act of rebellion that may bode well for him in the elections in March, several dozen did.

“What we are seeing is a surge of change in the Netherlands,” Baudet said afterwards.

“The forces that produced Brexit in Britain and the election of Donald Trump in America are being unleashed in Holland as well.”

The right-wing rabble-rouser Geert Wilders, known as “the Dutch Trump”, is leading the polls with a little over 30% of the vote. But just as emblematic of what is stirring in Holland is the growing excitement around Baudet and his campaign for more direct democracy.

Baudet, a former university professor who turned 34 yesterday, headed the Forum for Democracy think tank that organised and won a referendum last April opposing a European Union association agreement with Ukraine. After the government found a way of getting round the vote, he turned the think tank into a fully fledged political party of the same name.

Although that was only five months ago, Baudet’s party is already outdoing its rivals on social media and he predicts it will win enough parliamentary seats to give him the role of “kingmaker” in post-electoral coalition talks.

With Le Pen now looking like very possibly like winning the French election due to the issues with Fillon and now these guys in the Netherlands we could well see a full disintegration of the EU by the time we end up leaving.
