i'll probably be repeating myself in another 50 years time  , but in winter COLD weather sources travel from an Easterlyish direction and  as Scotland is further West than a lot of places notably East Anglia ,then it's WARMER .

In the same was that the UKRAINE is a fookin site colder than PORTUGAL in winter

If it was minus 20 here in London it would still be far more palatable than living in Scotland.

In Summer cold sources travel NORTH WEST to the SOUTH EAST .

Which is why COLCHESTER is a fookin site warmer than the ISLE OF Lewis in SUMMER

after saying that - i have just noticed the sharp contrasts which are a little strange.

-5 in London  when it was plus 6 in Nottingham etc  , those lowest temps have been exclusively around the south east corner and tail off pretty quickly  as soon as one moves north .

there was a case before Christmas when there was a whole week of -7 temps in north-northern France when it was  plus 11 in the south of England

You've got to factor in the wind chill, and Scotland is now covered in these big desk fans on all the hills.

would feel colder in Scotland than East Anglia even though W /Scotland is normally always warmer in winter .
