The gap between the super-rich and the poorest half of the global population is starker than previously thought, with just eight men, from Bill Gates to Michael Bloomberg, owning as much wealth as 3.6 billion people, according to an analysis by Oxfam released on Monday.
Presenting its findings on the dawn of the annual gathering of the global political and business elites in the Swiss ski resort of Davos, Oxfam says the gap between the very rich and poor is far greater than just a year ago. It's urging leaders to do more than pay lip-service to the problem. If not, it warns, public anger against this kind of inequality will continue to grow and lead to more seismic political changes akin to last year's election of Donald Trump as US president and Britain's vote to leave the European Union. "It is obscene for so much wealth to be held in the hands of so few when 1 in 10 people survive on less than $2 a day," said Winnie Byanyima, executive director of Oxfam International, who will be attending the meeting in Davos. "Inequality is trapping hundreds of millions in poverty; it is fracturing our societies and undermining democracy." The same report a year earlier had found that the richest 62 people on the planet owned as much wealth as the bottom half of the population. However, Oxfam has revised that figure down to nine following new information gathered by Swiss bank Credit Suisse. Oxfam used Forbes' billionaires list that was last published in March 2016 to make its headline claim. According to the Forbes list, Microsoft founder Gates is the richest individual with a net worth of $75bn. The others, in order of ranking, are Amancio Ortega, the Spanish founder of fashion house Inditex, financier Warren Buffett, Mexican business magnate Carlos Slim Helu, Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg, Oracle's Larry Ellison and Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York. |

The poorest need to get a job and do some work.
By:
why is being poor such a disgrace, I don't know.
By:
So if everyone got a job inequality would end..thanks for that solution...
By:
Why should you be equal to Bill Gates BM?
By:
no one in Britain is poor, who would deny that ?
By:
that is why it is important to mention jobs, gates and others like him have created millions of jobs, and his friend Steve Wazniak

anyone who doesnt believe in a minimum wage doesnt believe in any decency........this information backs that up

The ability to find a job is the most important thing, not so much inequality in pay
By:
I never said everyone should have equal pay to Bill Gates ..mind the gap
By:
So what's the answer? Communism?
Most on the list provide goods or services so stop buying/using what they provide & they'll be poor just like everybody else. |
By:
The answer is pay multiples of median earnings nobody should earn 1000 times median earnings
20 times is where I would set the bar. |
By:
So what happens when your assets are 1000 times the median earnings, are you forced to sell and give it to the treasury?
By:
I'm not talking about assets I'm talking about earnings but some have called for a Swedish
like tax on property. |
By:
Corbyn is right in his call for capping of CEO earnings.
By:
I'm not talking about assets
The assets is where the wealth is kept BM. |
By:
I am sure that Bill Gates can live off $1million a year to keep him inline with your calculations BM, he will still hold as much wealth or are you going to tackle his private investment firm to steal the rest?
By:
Breedingmad,
The wealth of those in the list is based on the shares they own in the various companies not their annual earnings. |

Facts, that's just the politics of envy.
Equality of opportunity - yes. Equality of outcome - no thanks. |
By:
Politics of envy is another form of populism.
Jeremy is playing his populist card right now. |
