The NHS is the only decent thing this country has done for it's citizenry in it's history and idiots want to sink the boat at every turn, because of some bad press. Probably generated by doctors with feet in both camps. Private and social care.

Two biggest items of government expenditure are pensions and NHS.  Neither have a future in their current form.

I think that further charging for NHS services is inevitable.  We are already paying for prescriptions and car parking.  We pay for dentists, opticians - but you can get hearing test at the NHS?  The concept that we shouldn't pay a penny for it irritates.  Surely better to have to contributed to the system at the point of service is better than an increased private health system - which, in my limited experience is inefficient.

I can't see any way that pensions will not be means tested within the next 10 years.

Is an interesting site.  It shows public spending by category over the years.

It is all very well showing % of GDP in these comparisons, but more important is the amount of tax collected from that GDP.

Nothing will change until all the PFI contracts which the NHS are tied into are scrapped.

I had a friend who was a buyer for a large company, and he told me of a guy who was supplying his company with everyday things
like nuts and bolts for the engineering department. They were having a chat over the phone and this subject came up.. the bolts
they were buying cost 60p each or something like that, but if the local hospital ordered them the price miraculously went up to
£4.50 each. He asked why this happens, and the reply was 'because they will pay whatever we ask them'! The consensus was that the accounts dept within the hospital were so removed from reality they hadn't a clue what their engineering department was buying.
So many stories around about waste in nhs, like renewing equipment annually to keep the budget up... I could go on.

It is because the NHS is increasingly privatised that it is partially failing. It is the link between it and the private health and social care system that is leading to corruption.
There has to be a complete break between the two systems, now the private system bleeds off resources, staff and infrastructure from the NHS. everyone is in on it, the staff and politicians and management and companies.

The problems lie with the connection between the NHS and the private.

Only by having the NHS and social care as one system, and separating it completely from the private system will costs go down, not up.
And the costs will go down in both the NHS, and the private system.

By running the NHS essentially in competition with the private system, and not in cooperation, only in this way can you cut out the conflict of interest and corruption.

If there is a link between the two, as there is now, then the private will cherry pick everything from the NHS, the work they do, the easy and quick surgery leaving the NHS to take over the costs and time of aftercare and often having to fix things that go wrong.

In Leeds I was taken from the Nuffield Hospital where I had my operation to the L.G.1 only yards away by Ambulance to
be treated by the same Consultant Surgeon .The difference was I didn't have two Nurses on call 24 hrs a day a private
room with sky t,v and much poorer food.Private equals wasted money and happy patients N.H.S means overworked underpaid
staff and unhappy patients.

Tories now blaming GPs for the failing of the NHS.

The important point is not so much that it is free at the point of delivery. If there are some charges the important thing is that this money goes to the NHS, that it is charged by the NHS, that the money charged goes to the NHS and not individuals or private companies outside or even partially within the NHS.

once there is the principle of charging then you can be sure that if there is a connection between private and the NHS then this money will go into individual pockets and not the NHS. It can be seen very clearly in dentristy, but it is there also right throughout the NHS and its dealings with the private sector.

The private companies are a business, they are there to make money, that's it. and when the nhs works in partnership with the private system it will become increasingly corrupt

Why not just give the NHS an extra 50 Billion. That would solve the problem.

It will soon be impossible to get a NHS dentist who is British, they are working in the private sector. and in the same building they bring in agency staff from all over the world.the same is happening with doctors and nurses and staff in the NHS.
and who pays for all this ? the British taxpayer.
It's an almighty scam and everyone involved in the NHS and private health care know what is going on.

social care is largely delivered by the private sector. the quality is variable to say the least.

I have been with 2 different NHS dental practices in different parts of the uk in the last 10 years. The first was from Eastern Europe with an assistant from Australia. the second was from Spain, now again my dentist has changed and she is not from Britain.

any conversations you have with them will be an attempt to find out how much money you have and how much they can charge you and you what work it is profitable to do.
they are very subtle in the way they ask but I am know what's going on : )

Beggars belief that people think that the addition of people taking profits out of the healthcare system will improve things.

Companies will make money at no risk, if they stop making profits, they can just walk away, as happened with Circle Healthcare.

It's paid for out of general taxation.

Pretty much every other country in the world manages to incorporate private elements into their health systems without a problem - they don't have to be all profit making

Absolutely not! One of my transgender wives has finally become pregnant, apparently it cost loads but it turns out it's a female fetus, obviously I complained to my pre-natal team but they told me there weren't the funds to do an in utero sex change operation! Outrageous!

One reason we are a nation of heavy drinking and smoking, salad dodging, lazy fat feckers is that the NHS (ie. you and me) is always there to pick up the bill.

Maybe we should be taxed on our weight, progressively ..

Some would find that a bit extreme, but much simpler to tax lard and give tax breaks to sprouts.
