So I wanted to pay off a mortgage sub account with TSB, for which I have internet banking. My money is with Lloyds, for which I have internet banking. Sounds simple yes?

I phone TSB yesterday to get a redemption figure, and ask how I can pay it off. They say "You can do a transfer to this sort code and account number via internet banking".

So I log on last night to Lloyds and go to transfer the money. But it won't let me as it is too much. With the daily payment limit for their internet banking it will take me making payments on three different days to get it done, over which time the redemption figure will have changed twice anyway. So I call them and ask how, seeing as they won't let me transfer my own money out of my account, I can pay off this mortgage. "You can go into one of our branches and ask for them to make a CHAPS payment for you".

So I phone TSB mortgage line last night at 8pm, which their website says is open til 9pm, to find it is shut. So I phone their internet banking number - which is still open - and ask if I can pay the amount off over the phone with them. "No sir, you need to phone the mortgage line to do that"

So I phone the mortgage line this morning having been unable thanks to Lloyds to pay the whole amount by bank transfer, to get a new redemption figure as it will have changed from Friday to Saturday and ask if I can pay it with a debit card over the phone. "No sir, we can't take redemption payments, only overpayments".

So I go into town just to find a Lloyds branch and ask them to do a CHAPS payment to get this over with. They take all my details and go through security, etc, before asking me if I realise they are going to charge me £30 for the privilege. "No I didn't know that, and seeing as I am only taking this action because your online bods won't let me transfer my own money without having to log on on three consecutive days to reach the amount I need, I am not giving you £30 so cancel that".

The bastards between them have just made it as difficult as possible to the point that I am going to have to drive to one of the number of rapidly decreasing TSB branches (decreasing because of course you can do so bloody much online now can't you, as I am finding out) on Monday and write a bloody cheque as that is the easiest and quickest way to get it done without people charging me to do things with my own money or jump through hoops to use it. And these b'stards were all one company just a couple of years ago. Welcome to the age of internet banking.

Appalling behaviour. I recently tried to transfer a four-figure sum (only £8,000 and therefore not 'crime of the century' material) from a Lloyds account to Nationwide. The transfer was blocked and I immediately had LLoyds fraud department on the phone asking all manner of questions until they were satisfied it was kosher.

Pathetic waste of my time.

Apparently one of the main banks has been predicted to fail during 2017 following a hack and subsequent run.
Will that make you feel better?

Never had a problem with my bank (satander), any time i need to move a decent sum of money they send me a text to my phone to confirm and i have to enter a code.

CHAPS transfers are £25

actually that's with some banks, lloyds are £30.Grin

I recently had a problem receiving a bacs transfer, literally took 10 days longer than it should to be cleared, meant to be 3 clear working days

Santander asked for a fee to finalise paying off my mortgage and the return of deeds.
Think it was about £30
Told them I was paying the outstanding mortgage and not the £30 pounds for the deeds, they said it might affect my credit rating!
Told them I wasn't worried about that and payed the remainder of mortgage by check, not including £30 and got the deeds a few weeks later

Johnny.
You wouldn't think it was a waste of time , if your account had been hacked, and you ended up losing £8k !

try getting a settlement quote for a cheque clearing date that you have
little control over, yep you can post it early if you knew the money was there
and its all been planned

but if you get a little windfall or have an investment mature and its better
than you expected and seek to minimise interest payments on
a long term mortgage....

its all a nightmare

surely they know their customers well enough having asked on every visit if you
would like a mortgage quote, ffs

surely they can set up payments to bona fide mortgage accounts free of charge
for their known customers, its not asking much

you cant lfc because the balance amount has changed between writing cheque and it clearing

you can get a settlement based on writing a cheque and it clearing in 7 days, ....but
they stiff you 7 days interest .........they can transfer the money from your account
in 2 hours, but want £25/30 or will transfer up to £25k free of charge in 2 hours

If you go into your local Santander branch they might try and ask you to phone head office using their freephones in the corner of the bank.
ignore this, I pretended to be hard of hearing and asked the girl to do it for me.
She did this in the office and I wrote the cheque,
It's simple if you play the game a little to suit yourself and don't have them making you do their job for them
By:

They asked for an extra £30 from me I said no I didn't care about that, hinted it would effect my credit rating.
and getting the deeds.
it's all nonsense
By:
lfc1971
When: 08 Jan 17 15:42
I got the quote that the girl was given on the office phone before she knew how I would pay, I then wrote the cheque
I then stopped the direct debit and asked them to let me know when they had the deeds
they did this in a few weeks

doesnt solve the problem lfc

why did bank have your deeds anyway, i thought
that had died out yonks ago

or perhaps you are talking about something that happened before
the banks started being extra crass

I can't remember why the bank had the deeds, my solicitor had them at one time but he had to stand down for professional misconduct and everything in his offices taken away centrally
By:

When: 08 Jan 17 15:53
The head of solicitors phoned me to let me know about this and I quietly tried to inquire what he had done but they wouldn't tell me, of course.
but heard it was some property scam he was involved in,

anyway a number of years later I left it to Santander to track the deeds down and I was surprised to find they managed this easily. without the £30 : )
By:
lfc1971
When: 08 Jan 17 15:58
I seem to recall Santander wanted me to use a solicitor to redeem the mortgage, that had slipped my mind.
I ignored that as well and wrote a cheque.

because deeds have little value today compared to a few years back

banks used to charge to look after them, ffs

and mortgage with them

I don't see how, I wrote the cheque for the quote given to me by the Santander woman clerk after she had phoned up for me at the local branch.
I think I walked from the office and handed the cheque over to the teller
