I never heard of it till "Texas Joe" on Dragon's Den!

Haven't seen his on the shelves, but a fair few with different names, who have probably benefited from the publicity".

Looked at some yesterday that were more than £3.00 for a small bag full of next to nothing!

Dose a small amount somehow rehydrate in your mouth, into a 12oz sirloin steak?

Not the same but similar.. Biltong shop just opened near me. Just strips of dry sausage like meat hanging in the window.

It's fackin disgusting stuff. I cannot for the life of me see the appeal. I tried it once and can only say it was like eating a strip of steak that had been left on a tin roof top in Nairobi for 10 years.

I'm not quite sure Diva , did try it once (on a pizza) and tasted ok , but that was after adding my own mushrooms , extra cheese & onions !

Pulled pork is very good if it's done properly. Problem is, it started getting fashionable and then started to appear everywhere. Even supermarkets do it, but its as far away from proper pulled pork as that crappy square wafer thin ham is from proper gammon ham. Now you cant walk into a restaurant or pub without seeing it on the menu and all it is, is a big shoulder of pork cooked for about 3 hours in the oven then shredded. Proper pulled pork is literally a whole pig slowly barbecued in an oil drum grill over around 60-80lbs of coal and hickory chips for 10 hours until it falls off. I've had it once cooked like that at a street food thingy up Covent Garden. It's totally different. Whack loads of it in a bun with plenty of BBQ sauce. Superb.

Try dried Pigs ear 1/5 price and last longer than the mother-in-law.

it was a preserved food for men in wildernesses - they dried out the meat to keep it for months. it's like packet soup - shi te.
you don't buy it - you just look at it and say... i'll go and buy a real steak.

Well, based on responses and a look around I can't see the attraction!

Have looked at making oneself, but what a ridiculous process to go through, for such minimum returns!

I guess it could be useful for long outdoor pursuits, such as sailing, mountaineering and hiking etc,
but a complete waste of time as a TV snack!

For the same money, I would rather have several packs of Doritos and/or Pork Scratchings.

Having said that I wouldn't as avoid buying the stuff.

Walking through my local market today. Low and behold there was a bloke with a stall selling 'Original Biltong" he had a few samples of which I availed myself. Tasted like dried dog food. Disgusting!
