Or in the case of George Michael, reasons which are inconclusive?

There will be an underlying cause , most probably. However people can just randomly die, see sudden death syndrome etc. And at 40+ especially nobody is safe against a heart attack.
Report Ramruma December 30, 2016 9:30 PM GMT
Yes, and in most cases there is no post-mortem so the death certificate is basically just a doctor's best guess.

I thought if you had not seen a doctor, within the last of your life, there had to be a post-mortem
Report Ovalman. December 30, 2016 9:38 PM GMT
If you die anywhere else but a hospital I thought there had to be a post mortem. I was told that when my Dad passed away 17 years ago but I can't remember by whom.
Report saddo December 30, 2016 9:46 PM GMT
He's had a PM, I'm guessing they are struggling to find a medical term for death by lifestyle.

This link explains the circumstances under which a post-mortem (aka autopsy) is called for and undertaken.

Report Angoose December 30, 2016 10:06 PM GMT
When post-mortems are carried out

A post-mortem examination will be carried out if it's been requested by:

a coroner – because the cause of death is unknown, or following a sudden, violent or unexpected death
a hospital doctor – to find out more about an illness or the cause of death, or to further medical research and understanding
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 10:07 PM GMT
A post-mortem examination into the cause of George Michael's death was "inconclusive" police have said.

The star died aged 53 on Christmas Day at his home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.

More tests will now be carried out to determine what led to his death, Thames Valley Police said in a statement. The results of these tests are unlikely to be known for several weeks.

Michael's death is still being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.

The post-mortem examination took place on Thursday.
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 10:10 PM GMT
So simply, the examination was unable to find conclusive evidence so they'll try again.

Clearly, the doc had a pressing engagement at Alexandra Palace and will wait until the darts are done and dusted before concluding that GM suffered a "massive" heart attack.
Report Clouseau December 30, 2016 10:11 PM GMT
Presumably in George Michael's case they will have established what he died of but can't conclusively state, off the cuff, why that condition occurred so they have sent samples off to the lab for further analysis.
... and it's probably private and none of anyone's business unless next-of-kin make a statement.
Report saddo December 30, 2016 10:13 PM GMT
Never heard of a "private" cause of death at a post mortem.
Report Angoose December 30, 2016 10:22 PM GMT
Cause of death is always the same, lack of breath Cry
Report Ovalman. December 30, 2016 10:24 PM GMT
Cause of death is a lack of oxygen to the brain, not the heart stopping but isn't time of death a touchy subject?
Report Facts December 30, 2016 10:35 PM GMT
Oxygen to the brain is supplied by oxygenated blood, supplied by a pumping heart.

Angoose - your stupid post at 22.10 was elegantly and (unnecessarily imo) politely answered by ClouseauCool, yet still you post fluent bo llocks with an elementary attempt at humour just 12 minutes later.

Elementary attempts at humor are the best I can do, I'm afraid, get's even worse when I'm jumping around trying to follow several sporting events.

I'll try and pull my socks up though Happy

What is death?

Can you clone me from my blood cells many years after I die and would I be the same person?

I've passed my genes along with my wife's to my kids am I still alive?

What is life?

Great questions but difficult questions, I hope we find the answer.

nb - I'm all for humour, but the background to this thread is that some bloke died.

Being serious now...

For clarification, there IS a difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest. A heart attack just stops the supply of blood to the heart and starts killing off the muscle tissue whereas a cardiac arrest is where the heart actually stops.

And both can be catastrophic at home. If your ticker is going to pack up, it is best to do it in hospital surrounded by highly trained staff with the right drugs and equipment.
Report Aspro December 31, 2016 10:44 AM GMT
I had a heart attack at home Ramruma. At first I thought it was food poisoning but it was clear something wasn't right. Phoned 999 and they were at my home in double-quick time. Apparently I had 6 hours to live but that was sufficient time to deal with the situation. At least with a heart attack you have a chance.

Yes.  However far more people live for unexplainable reasons.
Report trebor December 31, 2016 11:53 AM GMT
I had a heart attack in the perfect place, after 16 days of sitting in front of the computer working on the World Snooker for 12 hours plus per day, I had what I first thought was indigestion, had been like it for two days, so after snooker finished (priorities eh?) went to hospital to get it checked, was part worried about what it might be and also worried that if it was indigestion about wasting their time.

They did some tests in A&E then about 3 hours later while attached to machine giving out the readings and being handed over to the nurses on the cardiac ward, I remember the nurse saying " this patient is in cardiac arrest".

I have a friend who is a paramedic and afterwards he said that the reason many people die from heart attacks is because they fail to recognise the symptoms and get help, like above food poisoning or thinking it is indigestion.
Report Aspro December 31, 2016 12:09 PM GMT
and also worried that if it was indigestion about wasting their time.

The rule of thumb is that ANY chest pain call 999 immediately, regardless! I have been told that countless times now. They would rather know you're ok than you thinking you're ok. With chest pain you are NOT wasting their time.

However...

I had a second heart-attack which felt just like a back ache; I had no chest pains at all just this dull pain in the middle of my back. I suffered this for 2 days before calling 999. The hospital were not happy with me for delaying the call.

A relative of mine's wife died from sudden death syndrome.  He just woke up on morning and his wife was dead and the coroner could provide no explanation.  He says that because there was no explanation he carries round with him the fear that other people think he killed her. Bit similar to cot death I guess.
