What idiot thought this one up?.Dual controls on a car are no good if you stall on a motorway,or crunch the gears, panic and stall. What chaos would ensue!!.
Ok so they say it's up to the instructor to decide if a learner is competent enough to handle a motorway. What happens if there's a crash,or serious crash?.
Guess who's going to be sued ??????!!!!!!!!.
If you were an instructor would you take the risk?.Another unworkable idea dreamed up these nobrainers. It's going to go the same way as the other considered ideas that they came up with before being tossed out.One was overtaking on the inside. The other was raising the speed limit to 90 mph!!!!!!.

So, first time you drive on the motorway is under the guidance of a qualified instructor or five minutes after you pass your test with your mates ?

Not a done deal just yet though.

Learner drivers will be allowed on to motorways for the first time, if new government plans are approved.

Transport minister Andrew Jones says the move would help make roads in Britain safer.

The lessons will not be mandatory and driving instructors will decide when their students are ready.

The Department for Transport is also looking at trialling a "target number" of hours of lessons to complete before learners take their test.

The proposal is one of a number of ideas being considered by ministers as part of a £2m research programme by the DfT into improving safety for new drivers.

The government said the change would allow learner drivers to "get a broader driving experience", practise at higher speeds and put their theoretical knowledge into practice.

Mr Jones said: "We have some of the safest roads in the world and we want to make them even safer.

"These changes will equip learners with a wider range of experience and greater skill set which will improve safety levels on our roads."

Stick 'em on the M25 and get caught up in a jam. I'm sure instructors will be happy to lose 2/3/4 bookings

I did Pass Plus after passing my test, which involved driving on motorways.  Does such a thing no longer exist?

You're considered to be capable of handling motorway conditions after you've proved something by passing your test.
Until them you can be a real danger to other road users.
And at the higher speeds usual on a motorway someone who hasn't passed their test is an even bigger danger to other road users.

So they're proposing that a learner can get into a car, and go straight onto the motorway with his mate as a passenger who has had a full license for three years?

Who got paid to dream that up?

Don't think that's the case DC. The way I read it that they only go on a motorway if an instructor feels they are competent to do so

The other was raising the speed limit to 90 mph!!!!!!.

If we speed up a bit we might be able to give the learners the slip.

Yes Aspro, that's correct according to this:

On Friday, transport minister Andrew Jones announced the plan, which would allow approved instructors to take "competent" trainees on motorways in duel-controlled cars.

It doesn't say that driving instructors will be obliged to take learners on the motorway.

What next motorway driving as part of the driving test?
I don't think testers would be very happy with that.

Of course, there are parts of the country where there are no motorways, not so many motorways in Shetland, for example.
Will be other rural areas where any new guidelines/requirements will require to be amended.

If I were a driving instructor I wouldn't want to be made to take all learner drivers on the motorway.

I know of drivers who have passed their tests who have never been on a motorway and never would go on one.

There are plenty of those around who simply don't like driving at speed.

Try driving on the North Circular around Brent Cross / Wembley, full of foreign sh1t that shouldn't even be in the country
let alone on the road.
Can't even keep their vehicle in the lane their in, veering into the next lane etc, might be in the 3rd lane & decide last second
their coming off at the exit their at, causing every lane to brake to a stand still to help Mr useless individual Jonny
foreigner continue with their dangerous driving.

Can't see the worry with learners when we have this backward breed on the road

I suppose the answer to this thread is, its acceptable for real British learner
drivers to have lessons on motorway training, but any 3rd world country learners its
absolutely unacceptable.
