Recommend a good red wine please

There was a long thread about this a few months ago. Get someone who likes bringing old threads back to find it for you.

its tough if we dont know what sort of reds you may have previously enjoyed

8 - 10 is double what ya need to pay to get a quaffable red

Agree with Donny, but given your limited preferences, Italian Amarone would seem a perfect fit, and don't buy the cheapest you can find; expect to pay around £15.

Yes, Tesco do a very drinkable Cabernet Sauvignon for a bit under 4 quid.

Delta - quaffable was not part of his criteria, nor did he state a budget.  Buckie would probably meet his criteria as stated, but given he said "good" there seems to be a quality element to his requirements.

the 5 quid stuff with nice pictures on the labels is ideal for gifts, imo

Do not pay any more than £5 a bottle. Isla Negra is fine , at a little less than that.

I can't normally drink cheap red but gave the Tesco one a go a few months ago, and no probs with it.
At under 4 quid, it will do for me.

Given his requirements, any wine made from Cab Sav is likely to be too dry for him.  Isla Negra is just a brand, not a wine, BUT is a reasonable cheap choice,  BUT BUT to meet his criteria you would need to specify the Merlot they do, which is very smooth (and bland.

Spot - you can google Buckie. - you wouldn't want to drink it, although many do

Crags - Excellent post on Buckie, and given your opinion, it will help the O.P. rule out any of your proper wine recommendations

Just a hobby, crags but I do like my wine. My next door neighbour has 40 acres of vines producing top quality English wine (and yes I do mean that)

lucky you! I have heard some good things about English wine. Some place in Sussex turns out a very good one apparently, not tried it.

crags, I am in Mid Sussex, halfway between Brighton and Gatwick.  PM me if you want some recommendations, they get fussed with posting trade links on here.

I think there was a Pinot Noir from the Bolney estate recommended in the Times last weekend.

No disrespect but for red wine its got to be French.

I'm with Donny on Rioja, the tempranillo from Lidl called Toro Loco very good for the price (about £4 I think).

Had a fabulous bottle of Felsina Vin Chianti Classico this week, £30 Waitrose. It's quite alcoholic but has an amazing long, broad finish. Make sure you decant it first for it to really get going.

majestic have a 2005 gevry chambertin up for about £17 or £90 for 6,excellent wine at a good price.like johnny says decant open it 2/3 hours before leave at room temperature.enjoy.

Bodega Renacer Enanore just over £20 (but it's Christmas)

Amerone   an excellent red

El mason, gran reserva from Asda's extra special range. Tesco do a similar one, Tescos finest rioja, gran reserva.
Mason is £10.98, Tesco's one is £10.  These two will not be beaten for value imo

If you just want a cheap one, Aldi's Arghentine malbec for £5.99 is very good.

tons - if you are making a case for ale, you probably need to drop Watneys Red Barrel and spell Peculier correctly

I only drink le Piat d'Or,but then i'm a peculier percuLIAR.

Was watching a foodie wine type programme on tv recently and the presenter was saying that he gives his red wines a whizz in the food blender first to help release more flavour.

You cannot beat Gevry Chambertin with the turkey...For a white my preference would be Mersault.

Posy - easy to beat Gevrey Chambertin, with Chambertin!!, but the £285'ish a bottle is a bit of a barrier

a good wine has to be around the £50 a bottle mark - anything less and i simply use it to clean the silver .

Echo those who have said Amarone which is about £20-£25 a bottle. Absolute quality drinking.

Fork out a few quid extra for a magnificent Amarone Riserva at about £35. Although Aldi had it at £20 (2010 a slightly cheaper year) recently and have sold out. Just make sure you keep this gem to drinking yourself and get out a nice £8 bottle of Rioja or such like when friends call round.

2015 is a ripe Burgundy vintage with attractive black-cherry fruit. It is richer than 2013, the last vintage of this red that we offered, yet remains a lightish wine. Entry-level red Burgundy divides opinion: confirmed Burgundy lovers will enjoy its light refreshing qualities, but Burgundy beginners may be shocked by its austerity and high acidity. For sweeter pinot look to Chile, for richness and power, looking away from pinot to the Rhône may be a better option.

A friend of mine told me that the best wine is made in Scotland. It has a cheeky nutty malty flavour and comes in an elegant purple canister.
