Saladin was a Kurd (though with mostly Turk soldiers ).
He overthrew the Fatimid Caliphate of Egypt and made it part of his own realm.
Saladin's dynasty was overthrown by the Mameluke Turks (60 years after Saladin's death)
Baybars was the first Mameluke ruler and he was very ruthless indeed . Though if he hadn't been around it's hard to see who else would have stopped the Mongol invasion of the Middle East....
Christian forces - the Crusaders and Byzantines were very weak by then (mostly due to fighting each other ) and every other Muslim state had been crushed . The last Caliph of Bagdhad was tied in a sack and trampled to death by the horses of the Mongol Khan.
The Mongols were pagans and would have happily slaughtered everyone in Syria ,Palestine ,Egypt and beyond

Saladin allowing Christians to visit Jerusalem was part of the treaty with Richard I that ended the war , not a goodwill gesture.
Though it is probably fair to say he was more honourable than Richard .
