On a related subjecte, I can't believe our MOD are getting rid of the navy's surface missiles for at least a few years, with AFAIK no planned replacement, which is totally insane. A 3rd world country with missiles could attack our ships from over the horizon and RN couldn't retaliate as they are back to 100 year old style naval guns. Idiotic.

Well there's a reason battleships with huge guns went away and big guns have the largest range.
Ok planes had a huge HUGE amount to do with that, but end of the day a little destroyer with good missiles can take out an entire naval group without being touched if their defense system didn't knock them out of the sky, if they had only normal guns and the weather was wrong. Sheffield etc being a good case in point, anyone who read up on the mistakes and failed technology will understand. If you have a 20 inch reach and the other guy has an 80 inch reach in a boxing match, and it takes you hours to move inches towards him, who will win? |
