1) McCain Simply Gorgeous Chips -
(I am a Chip Expert, and these are the best imo - thick cut chips and basted in Beef Dripping.)

2) McCain Home Chips Straight Cut
(Oven chips have improved a lot over the years and these are very good, crisp and chunky chips.)

Couldn't agree more. And you can often buy them for just £1 in the bigger supermarkets. Just had a plateful with some fish.

Saw a new type in the supermarket yesterday. McCain "gasto chips". were sometihng like £2.50 for a small bag!

I like the southern fries or curly fries.

The worst kind are the cheap kind of fries that are sort of translucent and you can't grill or oven cook, you need to fry I think.
Or they are just revolting no matter how you cook them.

no such thing as a good oven chip.

tesco's string fries are as good as macdonalds but you have to fry them. only six natural ingredients. McDon, uses 18 ingrediants - some radioactive.

You've got to hand it to the supermarkets and food companies when with clever marketing and packaging they can convince people to buy a product that is vastly inferior but a lot more expensive than the real thing.
Report saddo April 24, 2017 10:16 AM BST
Very good chips need cooking twice, it's a lot of mess and faffing. If you don't have a deep fryer it has to be the oven, or those floppy anemic things from the chippy.
Report TELL DEL April 24, 2017 10:43 AM BST
"Very good chips need cooking twice...."

Totally agree, blanch them first (so they are cooked without colour) and then later in the deep fat again to crisp them up to a pale golden colour. Lot of people reckon Maris Piper best potato for chips, wouldn't argue with that, but a good Wilja will also make nice chips. Best way to cook them beef dripping, just a fantastic flavour for real fish and chips. Lot of chip shops especially up North used beef dripping years ago but these days most people want the healthiest options.

Oven chips have improved a lot but still second best to 'real' chips. And best oven chips imo those posh ones McCain Gorgeous Chips - basted in beef dripping.
Report bix April 24, 2017 11:05 AM BST
Tefal Actifry makes very good low fat chips. Not as good as proper twice fried chips but in a different league to "oven chips".
Report Johnny_Mustang April 24, 2017 11:21 AM BST
I'm surprised a lot of erstwhile sensible posters here are endorsing oven chips as I understood they were exclusively for poor people.
Report bix April 24, 2017 1:58 PM BST
Poor and lazy people. Strange frame of mind though. When you're skint you buy expensive processed food products that you could cook yourself for a fraction of the cost.
Report Johnny_Mustang April 24, 2017 9:04 PM BST
