Says 3 Northern Ireland sports stars should be on the list

Carl Frampton (Super bantamweight AND featherweight world champion 2016)
Bethany Firth (Britain most successful paralympian 3 golds and silver 2016)
Jonathan Rea (World superbike champion 2015 and 2016)

Hard to argue when the likes of Nicola Adams and 3 Paralympians winning less medals make the list Crazy

Frampton manager Barry McGuigan said he too was miffed at the champion's exclusion.

He labelled the omission of Belfast boxer and history maker as a "shocking oversight".

"If he wins American boxing writers' fighter of the year, it will be such an embarrassment for the BBC.

"There's no point crying about it now. But it was shocking."

Absolute Disgraceful but to be honest not real a shock its more of a shock the twats didnt put the England football team up for the team award. A lot of English seem to be sooo jealous of our wee country we over achive in sport  where the English under achive. Im really disgusted Angry

Carl Frampton only had 2 fights in 12 months. A delivery driver has more than that in a week.

frampton suffering from boxing having hardly any mainstream coverage these days. 99.9% of the population wouldn't have a clue who he was (obviously there are others on the shortlist who are less than household names too) although you can argue people on a panel deciding the nominations should

The omission of Chris Froome makes the whole thing a big fat joke.

considering after wimbledon the 6 nations is probably the BBC's 2nd most important live sport event these days - they bang on about it enough - i'd say the absence of anyone from the england rugby team who've won every game this year is even more baffling

froome rides a bike, do we have to keep giving out knighthoods and awards for that, it's not really a sport.

If Frampton fought Rigo and won then he may have got more credit

His fight with Santa Cruz was seen in mainland UK as a swerve away from Rigo

That poor wee country all getting ready to watch him fight Santa Cruz again next year

Quite brilliant sir.

Who cares about SPOTY anyway? The BBC covers so little sport I'm amazed there are no Bowls/Tiddliwinks players included.

All awards events are so subjective anyway. Open to much debate. In terms of achievement (not personality) Murray takes it. World Number 1? Incredible.

Has become totally unwatchable. And why a shortlist (sic) of 16 instead of the normal 10 (although it should be 5 or 6).
I have the greatest admiration for Paralympians, some who are just as dedicated as professionals, but they are never going to be in the top 5 and its just so the Beeb can pat itself on the back about how inclusive it is.
Why not just have a separate Disabled SPOTY, and a LGBT SPOTY awards prog, to keep the BBC types and proper sports fans happy.

Stephen Hendry never got it and i don't think many Scots care

Murray get's it due to his British status as the English hold onto any winners like Mo Farah , The Cricket Team , John Barnes , Linford Christie etc

Why the need for a shortlist anyway?

Reduce the scale of the thing, the bombast, the pomposity, and the hype. If you MUST have Gary Lineker near the thing then tell him it's not a vehicle for him practising his stand up comedy routines. Tell the producers to focus on showing event coverage as it happened, with the commentary, because the viewers want to remember their favourite sporting moments of the year, not work out what sport they are watching from a close up of a drop of sweat falling from a competitors nose whilst an indie ballad soundtrack plays over it.

Let the public vote for whoever they want, with a cutoff of the Sunday before. The top 5 in each category can then form the shortlist, which viewers vote for on the night. If the Beeb haven't invited the winner (Bob Nudd anyone?) - tough! We all have a bit of a laugh about it and move on.
