Roughly translates as :
"Boo hoo hoo hoo hoo. How dare these horrible uneducated working-class low-earning British people spend their hard-earned disposable income in whatever manner they want? Don't they realise the only time it was OK for them to spend money completely frivolously was when Mrs Thatcher died? Then it was OK for them to collectively spend insane amounts of money buying downloads of the 'Ding Dong The W*tch Is Dead' song. Boo hoo hoo hoo hoo".

Go have a gander at what exactly is being 'reduced' in price and then come and tell me what you found useful that you would have been interested in if it werent 'reduced'. Because I cant find anything of worth, and there lies the issue. All companies churn out rubbish and race to the bottom and use marketing principles to manipulate the public into buying it as though it had value.

I've got no overwhelming personal desire to buy anything in the sales, but if hundreds of thousands of people across the western world choose to do so then let them carry on. What's the problem? Criticism of these 'sales' and the shoppers can often sound a bit like snobbery don't you think?
As you're the expert of what represents value, I was wondering whether this item below represents value. Been looking at this sort of mobile device for a while, and notice that the price on this one has almost halved during this 'sale' period. I haven't bought it yet because I'm still looking at the security aspects of these things. Any recommendations?

Just like the Tory's Manifesto then.

alun I have no experience of the product, but I would say this; when price alone is a determination of sale then its safe to say very little innovation is occurring. Put another way, there are a multitude of cross breed laptop/tablet/phablet/phones, mini tablets etc in the market that have no discernible value over each other. They have simply copied each other and come to market on a wafer thin selling point and used marketing to push the product.
What happens is either innovation dies or companies protect artificial future sales by having devices that run their own flavour or fittings and largely dont inter relate with competitors making it bad for consumers. Or The intrinsic value is stripped out and simply made cheaper most likely by under paid dissincentivised work forces (also known as Shareholder Value Maximisation)
Now Im not completely anti innovation if it isnt false innovation that simply argues theres an angle for sale rather than solving a problem as false innovation simple creates what is known as the 'choice paradox' where the consumer is given arbitrary variations on a theme and has to waste more time in finding what will not be obsolete within a short period.

Maybe I'd best wait until the price drops to £20 for fear that I might have been conned by an unscrupulous blighter putting products onto the market just to make a few quid, as opposed to creating something of value. Perish the thought.

Unlucky Postmannick. There used to be a thriving postie community on here 5-10 years ago. It got to the stage when they used to hold 'union' type meetings on here amongst themselves. What happened to those fine men I wonder?
They seemed to disappear around that time when the employer was talking about upping the pace of their rounds to 4 miles an hour. (This would naturally involve making most of them slow down from their normal frenetic pace).
I miss the Betfair Posties and it's good to see another one here.

what shouldnt happen and is happening is that the media, pundits etc are encouraging people to spend because with interest rates low its not worth saving.and because its never been cheaper to borrow money nows the time to do it, no matter what interest rates are its always right to squirrel a few quid away for a rainy day if you can and its always preferable to avoid getting into debt no matter how cheap it is to borrow money if you dont need to, getting a tv when yours breaks down no matter what interest rates are will usualy in life be better than changing your tv because theres a new model in town and theres so called cheap money bout, imo of course

Thanks Chaser for that info. I am completely unfamiliar with products like that tablet, and my only mobile phone is a 7 quid job from Argos which does next to nothing. (Purchased only for 'emergency' phone calls). I thought that £30 wasn't bad for an 'entry level' to the tablet world.

alun You are doing way too much thinking for a product of that price point, that is why they price it as low as they do. Not withstanding the fact its likely to be totally amazon orientated to pull you into future amazon purchasing, its probably a loss leader for that reason.
You arnt expected to find a perfect purchase, it has a short life cycle and is ultimately 'disposable' so you just buy it for a seemingly low price, and then churn and replace with the next one.
That is the very point of this garbage generation that wont fix products or manufacturers make products with any intended real value (or use) beyond a limited number of activities. There will be a third world drop off point with a pile of these units burning releasing toxins into the local communities and the makers will have already counted profits and come up with the next one.

that's true as well
you get these tablets in china for about $9ish if you buy only 20 units and need no business to order them ( re-sell on ebay ) but think of the complaints.
go to alibaba and check it out ( might be some scammers ) but not all

Cheerful young delivery man giving a cardboard box to young woman while standing at the entrance of her apartment BRITAIN is eagerly waiting for whatever the **** it bought yesterday to arrive.
Consumer goods bought over ‘Cyber Monday’ will begin arriving from this morning, surprising shoppers who remember only that these items were incredible bargains.
Account manager Donna Sheridan said: “New packages arrive hourly, the contents of each a mystery.
“From 8am Friday I had at least 18 tabs open at any one time, and I was usually at checkout stage on at least one of them.
“I dimly remember thumbing my credit card number into my phone while in traffic on the A34 at some point. I don’t remember what for but at the time I felt strongly that it would complete me as a person.
“There are so many cardboard boxes stacked outside my house it resembles an alleyway in Starsky & Hutch.”

My problem is that too much of this stuff is being paid for* by Tax Credits: people ensure they don't exceed 16 hours of work/week to obtain the Tax Credits, then have to find something to fill the time they consequently have on their hands. Which turns out to be shopping for shoddy Chinese plastic.
*To be clear, by "paid for" I mean "credit card obtained".
