Mercedes race engineer: "OK Lewis, this is an instruction - we need 1.45.1 for the win."
Hamilton: "I suggest you guys let us race."
An earlier 'request'. In other words FO.

good luck to lewis getting the full support of the team next season
rosberg somply had to let vettel through and lewis would have speeded up

The only reason why Rosberg won was because Lewis had so many inexplicable mechanical problems, someone did not want him to win.
F1 fans know who the real winner is, the people's champion, the moral winner.

Stupid thing was that as donny osmond said, if Rosberg had let himself be overtaken, Hamilton would have had to speed up because he needed to win the race. Rosberg could then have pottered about in third to be world champion.
What Hamilton should have done was blast out in front and win by half the track -- that would have been a bigger FU to Rosberg.

yep, none of them have the bottle to come out and say it though, typical keyboard warrior types, I feel sorry for them, Hamilton unlike Rosberg, came from a tougher background and deserves what he's got, Rosberg has always had it laid on a plate for him.

Fair play to Rosberg , the pressure was big and he is a worthy champ. Reckon he'll really shine next year and may well win again.
I'd still have done what Hamilton did though..

Hamilton did the right thing. Its called racing ffs. F1 is the only sport where tactics are criticized.
Delighted Rosberg won as LH seems an absolute c**t off the track

Hamilton is second in the World Championship, that is no mean feat.
There is little between Rosberg and Hamilton...at different times this season both have been the faster driver
Because the team is German there is always the thought that the team favours Rosberg, but there is no evidence of this?
Well done Rosberg for winning the World championship.

I see Hamilton tried to slow the race down, hoping others drivers would pass Rosberg, was this sportsmanlike?
It was the only thing Hamilton could do to win the World championship.

The trouble is most most teams have a number one and number two driver.
Mercedes are running two number one drivers, this will of course cause inevitable friction.
Neither of their drivers would want to leave Mercedes while they have the fastest car.

We don't often agree Scandi but in the main I agree with this. No matter what btw I'll always support a British competitor against any foreigner.

One thing that I think this has highlighted is the problem with the team system. Should only be technical and race info passed to the drivers and not instructions other than calling in for a pit stop.

There was some talk about Verstappen getting the job but he must be mid forties now. I remember fuel going all over his car once in the pits and an almighty blaze ensued - think it was at Hockenheim, maybe 1994.

Sorry, Guinness. I stopped following after Damon really. It was awful when Senna died - remember that horrible weekend. Barichello almost died on the Friday, Ratzenberger died on the Saturday ad we all know what happened on the Sunday.
Remember Verstappen driving for the Benneton team after Patrese retired I think.

Why did Damon Hill move teams after he won the world champs ?
During the Williams era I believe Frank Williams had a policy not to retain the driver who won the world title because he thought they would rest on their laurels. This is why I don't think Mansell was retained in 1993 and also why Hill went to Arrows having been replaced by Frentzen. I know an exception to this was Villeneuve in 1998 but they began to lose their edge at this time.
Hill almost won the 1997 Hungarian grand prix in the Arrows (a massively inferior car) but the car went kaput on the last lap and I think he finished second.

It used to be said that Hill turned down McLaren (and a world championship-winning car) to go to Arrows. It always seemed bizarre that he would do that and recently it's been revealed (by Hill himself) that McLaren didn't want him either. I think with Damon Sir Frank always thought he should have won the WDC earlier. Seems no one really rated him.

Well was initially the test driver at Williams - he also drove for Brabham at the same time but it was so difficult to get that car qualified (think he got it on the grid for the British GP in 1992). He got the job I think because he was seen as a good understudy to Prost in 1993.
Hill was in his thirties when he got the job as number two at Williams.

but slowing down the pace in some quarters started happening a lot more ( maybe just me ) but i'm sure it did

EG Mansell left for Indy Cars after he won the title in '92 but it was because Williams had signed Prost behind Nigel's back. he hated Prost with a passion after their time at Ferrari. Alan Jones stayed at Williams after he won the title, and Prost retired after he won it. Hill was treated very shabbily imo, I think it was down to cash at the end of the day. Hill wasn't that well paid at all by F1 standards, I think Frentzen must have joined them with some big sponsor backing. Damon was a decent guy, he could have gone to Ferrari and earned millions but instead decided to help Arrows and Jordan develop their cars.

Thanks BB - thought Williams had that policy but Villeneuve and Jones would prove that to be incorrect.
After Mansell won the world title I think Murray Walker went to interview him on the Isle of Mann. I seem to remember him saying something along the lines of that there had been an agreement to drive in 1993 and then what had been agreed and now not been agreed. That would fit in with your comment about signing Prost.
While we're on the subject of F1 drivers from the real era, my favourite was James Hunt :

yes I also loved Hunt EK how we could do with a few more characters like him. At the time it made me detest Lauda and what he stood for but looking back now he is a remarkable man.

1997 would be the last year in which Villeneuve would win a championship level race and finish the season in the top three. For 1998, Villeneuve's Williams team had to fare with less competitive Mecachrome engines, and Villeneuve moved to the newly formed British American Racing team in 1999.
