One of the more spectacular cases of recent times involved Capt Sir Alan McIlwraith, CBE, DSO, MC, MiD - or, rather, plain Alan McIlwraith, a call-centre worker living on a Glasgow council estate who built up an elaborate fake persona as a highly decorated officer who had finished top of his class at Sandhurst and served in the Balkans.

Channel 4 should do a program about these guys in their 8pm documentary slot.

Then the guys could at least say they've been "Mentioned in Dispatches".

Sledgehammer to crack a nut? Is this really a big enough problem to be worth worrying about? Presumably even after wearing  unearned medals is outlawed, this handful of fantasists will still be able to bore people in pubs with the exploits in WW2, the Falklands or Iraq, and will still be allowed to claim they've won medals and show them off to people (because possession cannot be banned or it will kill off the collectors market).

The Eastern front was a bloody battle of attrition -- the Russian equivalent of the Somme for us. And wasn't it the Battle of Moscow where most of the Russian tanks were British, supplied via the Arctic convoys?
