What do you mean the 'official answer' is thousand? Who is this official? Is it the Queen?

I would say the 'official' didn't consider 101 because the A doesn't come in the number itself. So you could say seven as 'A seven' and there you have your A.

Oh my...we are all so stupid.

If you spell out 'numbers', you'll never reach the letter A.

It comes from the time when people measured everything in units of 2 and 3, and their multiples, 8 and 12. The reason being that you can divide up and hence measure accurately fractions of anything by estimating halves and thirds. It's impossible to do so in tenths (the decimal system). So the important numbers were one to twelve inclusive. Everything else is a decimal luxury.

For instance, if I know how long a foot is, I can take a piece of wood that length, and by folding a piece of paper of the same length in half next to it mark off two half-feet. Tear the paper along the fold, and fold one piece in half again to mark off the quarter feet. Fold the new, small piece down the centre, open up again, then re-fold each side to the centre and the new folds give you three separate inches to complete your ruler.

You can use the same principle to make a slide rule, so money was divided up sensibly, with four farthings to a penny and 12 pennies to a shilling. Four crowns or 8 half crowns to pound. 5/4, 11/8 etc. on the racecourse. 25/1 (£100 to £4), 33/1 (£100 to £3) etc.

Thermometers were originally scaled by Herr Fahrenheit with 0 as the freezing point of a 50/50 solution of salt and water, and 96 (8x12) as the temperature of the human body. Anyone could find those two points. You then used the same principle of folding to scale off your thermometer. By a happy coincidence 32F (one third of the scale) turned out to be the freezing point of pure water.

Of course, the poncy Romans had their abacuses, and did count as you suggested (11, 12 and 13 are undecim, duodecim, tredecim etc.). But the Roman system of counting in decimals is hopeless. (Try doing multiplication or long division in Roman numerals, for instance - completely impossible). Hence when the Roman empire faded away, the decimal system did so with it. Unfortunately the bloody French resurrected it at the time of their Revolution, and we stupidly thought we should too in the end, on account of Continentals being sophisticated innit? So every time somebody mentions a metre, you mentally have to think of something a bit more than a yard. One pound fifty? Oh, that's thirty bob. Twenty centigrade? Is that warm or not? Well, it's a bit less than 70F, so you have to convert it first before deciding whether you need a coat. Stupid.

Ten, eleven, twelve - brilliant.

Apart from the garbled explanation of how to divide a quarter of a foot into 3 inches (fold one side over the other so one edge joins the other fold).
