Years ago, while studying history, the teacher told us it was difficult to over-estimate the importance of Joseph Chamberlain as a politician. At the time, I didn't understand why he was so important...but now...look at Nigel Farage, pretty much unique in the influence he has had.

How important do you think he is as a politician?

Surely Aaron Banks is more important. Trump was just his vessel.

I suppose that's a good point about Arron Banks, but if you go down that route, you could be talking about the big lottery winners in Scotland who contributed to SNP coffers. Deffo a good point, though...

Nigel Farage's import in British politics is immense.  No Farage, no referendum.

Joseph Chamberlain i guess is underestimated . In his own time people knew how powerful he was , but people with a superficial knowledge of history most likely look at lists of Prime Ministers and don't see him there is all it is.

Farage has been very influential, and his influence has been very obvious , but has no executive power at all so it is not an apt comparison.

I would say the most important figure in getting Britain out of the EU was Sir James Goldsmith.

Tony Blair and John Major both ruled out a referendum on membership of the single currency. At that time Britain joining the euro , as it was to become , was just seen as inevitable and it was just a matter of whether we joined at the start or 'when the conditions are right' with Blair favouring the former and Major the latter.

So in 1997 Blair winning the election would have been a clear mandate for joining .

Goldsmith started the Referendum Party , Major feared how many more seats this was going to cost and so pledged the Tories to it as well . Blair was leaving nothing to chance in winning the election so Labour promised a referendum and 'the five tests' .

Britain not joining the Euro in Blair's first term was the beginning of the process of Britain leaving the EU.

the haters will hate and deny. Putting aside his role in getting a referendum on EU membership, no other party leader had defeated the main two parties in the popular vote of any election until Nigel did it in 2014. That fact will always be in the history books.

Nigel Farage is the Sword of Damocles hanging over the head of the Tory party if they don't deliver on Brexit.

While he's still there  his importance as a politician now is enormous.

only thing i agree with you on crippen.

the problem is this could destroy the tories....well thats no problem at all.

if they dont carry out the wishes (based on lies) they get it in the neck from one half.
if they do and we become worse off financially they get it from the other half.

its a no win situation.

i guess NF was useful for something.

Most of the European politicians who have demonised Farage will have to change their tune as he will be the natural conduit to Trump. Like him or loathe him he is the President of the USA elect and the most powerful man in the world at present.Once he unites with Putin to erase IS from this earth he will be lauded and EU politicians will be scrambling to gain his ear and Farage will help to form his opinion about them,he trusts the man.

Farage must be waking up with morning glory 7 days of the week.

Just when the establishment had wiped the blood of it's nose after Brexit.
Farage forms a special relationship with the President of the USA, who has been demonised by the same people that Farage has been demonised by.

What a fantastic twist to this movie.

Don't claim that Marina Hyde is brilliant always - some of her sports and showbiz pieces aren't great imho - but when she writes about power, bogosity and pretension (and today's subject combines all three) she can be pretty magnificent.
