Unless you live in the area or are directly affected by it an accident like this is a minor news story to the rest of the country....unless you are a rubber necker type.

Croydon has a high proportion of blacks. This affects black people more than whites. #blacklivesmatter
Report twizzle22 • November 9, 2016 11:20 AM GMT
When the penny drops with the BBC that black lives have been lost it will be clear the decks and relegate Trump as an after thought.
Report mobo • November 9, 2016 11:20 AM GMT
how on earth does a tram (2 car) overturn ?  speed?
Report bigH • November 9, 2016 11:38 AM GMT
I used to live quite close to Sandilands and have been on the tram countless times on that line

There are some very sharp turns not far from Sandilands - I suspect speed will be the cause, either that or it will have hit a large vehicle on the line

Was on one of these trams when I was down in London about 6 months ago, looking at the pictures it is on a bend and no other vehicle is present, so going too fast round a bend could be it. Horrible thing to happen, people falling on top of one another as the tram slides over the road Sad
Report bigH • November 9, 2016 5:49 PM GMT
seen the pics - accident was at the exact point I mentioned earlier

Main BBC News at 6-00 ,or 6-30 when they got round to this minor item, said 5 dead. Shameful to ignore our news while they had 33 minutes on US election ! I wonder how much bad news the spin doctors released today ?

Would have thought Trams safest form of Travel Sad

The thing looks intact, hard to Believe so many DEAD Sad

RIP
Report badjoe • November 9, 2016 11:07 PM GMT
BBC 'Trams are not fitted with any safety protection systems that apply the brakes automatically if they are going too fast, according to the Office of Rail and Road.' Well that will be changing.
Report Just Checking • November 9, 2016 11:09 PM GMT
Yes it looked totally intact? Windows broke and people went under it perhaps? People on the top side broke necks falling?

It seems strange to have so many deaths.
Report ZenMaster • November 9, 2016 11:10 PM GMT
One of the lines of enquiry is that the driver fell asleep.

Any chance of the US Elections playing a part in this?
Report Ron-Russian • November 9, 2016 11:18 PM GMT
Probably a fast tracked driver?

Not a joking thread obviously - RIP Sad
Report Just Checking • November 9, 2016 11:21 PM GMT
You see train wrecks with the carriages ruined with less deaths, it's strange.
Report Des Pond • November 9, 2016 11:24 PM GMT
I find trams a bit scary. Nearly got run over by one in Oslo once. Didn't hear it coming, and it just looked like a pedestrianised area, didn't take enough notice of the tracks obviously.
Report Ron-Russian • November 9, 2016 11:25 PM GMT
didn't it say something like the driver had been arrested but not in
connection with the crash? or did i dream that? sure i heard along them lines earlier
Report Des Pond • November 9, 2016 11:26 PM GMT
Nah, must have been in connection with the crash, ron.
Report ZenMaster • November 9, 2016 11:33 PM GMT
Having been on that tram in the past myself, there is a steep down hill part were speed is easily built up followed by an extremely sharp bend,

I would imagine that the passengers were thrown into each other or the sides of the carriage at a terrific force with momentum.
Report Ron-Russian • November 9, 2016 11:34 PM GMT
ah yes, that must have been it Des!
Report breadnbutter • November 10, 2016 12:35 AM GMT
The downhill and bend might be key ,rear carriage  raise and then swing in a snake like fashion with the energy concentrated there,as carriage has came down passengers put through windows and then carriage with momentum goes over the top of them trapping them under the overturned carriage and track .
Just a guess though and do not know if thats the case although having seen pictures there did not seam to be a concertina effect of the carriage ,although there could be on the underside and trapped were in the carriage .
lessons will be learned .
Unusual for a driver to be arrested so soon and also suspected "falling alseep" rather than blacking out or just not knowing what happened to be given as a cause ,maybe there is CCTV in cabin ? even then still unusual for that speculation to be released so soon .

RIP the dead  injuries sound horrific and sounds like a long day for the emergency services trying to free the trapped passengers .

Looks like another case of human error although be interesting to here what safety systems were in place ,thought a dead mans handle was in operation on rail vehicles .
Report ZenMaster • November 10, 2016 1:19 AM GMT
You are more than likely correct breadnbutter, the back end carriages would have raised off the ground as the tram swung around the sharp bend, in a snake like fashion.
Everything you say is more than likely the tragic case.

If the accident had happened one hour later in rush hour, there could have been dozens of fatalities.
Report foxy • November 15, 2016 8:30 AM GMT
were all those killed on the tram or where some just walking by ?

Transport bosses were warned a tram had "tipped on one side" a week before another tram derailed at the same corner killing seven, it has emerged.
Shantall Singh complained to Tramlink saying she thought she would die when a driver "sped" around the bend near Sandilands station on 31 October.
On 2 November, the company replied saying it would "fully investigate".
Tram operators Firstgroup said it was "not appropriate to comment" as investigations continue into the crash.
One woman and six men were killed, and more than 50 people were injured, when the tram derailed in Croydon on Wednesday.
Report tictacman1 • November 16, 2016 11:15 PM GMT
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said the tram, which was carrying about 60 people, was travelling at 43.5mph in a 12mph zone.

In its interim report, it said there was no evidence of any track defects, or obstructions on the track.

The investigation also found no malfunction of the braking system.

The tram derailed last Wednesday morning shortly after coming out of a tunnel with a 50mph speed limit.

Initial analysis shows the driver, Alfred Dorris, did apply the brake after coming out of the tunnel but only enough to reduce his speed from 50mph out of the tunnel to 43.5mph. The tram travelled 25m before stopping.

TfL has offered to pay for the funerals of those who died but came in for criticism after it was revealed the families had not been told about it in person.
Report foxy • November 17, 2016 5:18 PM GMT
thanks zen

seems a high number of deaths when you see some of the train crashes .
Report ZenMaster • November 17, 2016 5:43 PM GMT
The company seems not have been monitoring the speed of the tram drivers. Previous passengers have remarked about previous speeds and considering drivers have been able to choose their speeds through that tunnel and around the bend, then i would imagine this was an accident waiting to happen.
