Know someone 2400 , Was lost through Poker ,never got it back..

As a help to us, do you just use the website on your own machine or have you used their app or some other computer?
I'm not sure I trust apps etc

Looks like you gave someone your password to place some bets for you. If you won, all's well. If you lost you'd blame it on the hackers. So you gave your password to one person in Indonesia, one in Brazil and one in Holland?

Can you deny the above? What's the BF policy on this? Do they take responsibility for such issues or you are on your own?

I think you should be ok if it happened last night as I think they'll have time to stop the withdrawal of winnings.

Recall this happened to someone who posted a thread on General Betting years ago.

Betfair's position was not their fault , customer responsible for their password/PC security , not a penny refunded.

withdrawal of winnings from whose account? Can they track all the matched bets and all the customers whose bets were matched from this account?

Even if they track them, those guys placed winning bets(as the OP says he lost those bets). How do you explain to a guy after he wins a bet that his bet was matched by an account taht was hacked. Would you believe that yourself if betfair said sorry, we have voided your winning bet because it got matched from a hacked account! Never.

So you do use their app? I'm a bit paranoid about this stuff, I never save the password in browser even on my own machine etc.
As far as I'm concerned if a browser can retrieve it, a hacker can

As i said, its really hard for you to prove you are not in on it yourself. You really need to check the legal aspect of this, who is responsible in case of an account breach. And then you can involve the media if you like.

Too late for this chap, but basic betfair account safety involves:

- use 2-step authentication
- never use hotmail/gmail accounts for betfair
- never have the same password for betfair and any other bookmaker
- never copy and paste a website link from the forum

They will probably just say you should have setup the 2-step authentication thingy.

I am not sure what IP addresses prove. That the account was accessed from some other country? How is that betfair's fault that someone logged into your account from another country?

I just can't see how you get your money back. Getting money back is a tough thing to do in itself. To get it back from a bookie!

What sort of bets were they? Did they use your account to lay at stupid odds on obscure markets? Or just normal odds?

By definition if someone has logged in they can tie it to the account.

They should add a "can't log in abroad if not pre approved" setting like say some banks you have to tell them if you go on holiday before the cards work..

Of course they can. The question is if they want to. They can easily know if those ip addresses use other betfair accounts. It should take them 2 minutes to check that. Then they can monitor the bets placed from those accounts. They can do it if they want to catch fraudulent accounts, keep betfair free of criminals etc etc. And if they find them and are nice enough to tell you that, you should get your money back. Only if they prove such activity, you have a chance.

They will also see if you are the one who would have benefitted if the bets had won. Like your account's bet was 2k and got matched by 30 different accounts, surely those 30 aren't running a scam, its you whose running the scam.

My account was hacked once, but I didn't bother reporting it because the hacker was a better bettor than me.

As i said, you gave your passwords to some people, they placed bets for you, youll cry foul if you lost. Youll take the money if you won. How do you deny this?

You really need to see the legal aspect of an account breach. Who is liable if an acount is hacked and money's gone. I really feel for you. Not a nice feeling to go through this.

Joel main bets 1. Back first half goals £3000 @ 1.5    2. Lay under 2.5 goals £2000 @ 5.4. Another bet won for me £2000

Yes they should have. They can also track your bets and see who matched them. if your bet got matched by one person on the other end, surely that's the person who hacked it. But if the hacker played just for fun, the bets probably got matched from dozens of other acounts and i can't really see how betfair can explain to them that their winning bets have been void because they were matched from a hacked account!

I think because its on the exchange, it makes it so difficult for you to get your money back. On the sportsbook it would have been a completely different story.

Unless betfair agree that it was a genuine hack and pay you 3400 from their pocket, which I doubt a bookie will do, unless forced by law.

Were those odds about what the market was saying or way out?

What's the reasoning for this if you don't mind me asking? My account is tied to my old hotmail account which I only still use for betting accounts set up 10 years ago.

Surely if the hackers have bet on betfair with their accounts using the same ip address as logging onto mine then they are mugs, which i cant see, but you never know.

The more i think of it the weirder it gets. Scenario; 2 people  involved one uses an ip masker logs into your account, his mate via telephone calls backs/lays bets with his betfair account with normal ip address.

Anyway going to bed now dont think i'll sleep much thanks all for your input, feel better for sharing it. Will keep you informed as to outcome.

Re getting your money back.  If your winnings have been siphoned off to another account or accounts for the purpose of stealing your cash Betfair can act swiftly and cancel the fraudulent withdrawal. This has been done before.  If, however, someone has hacked your account and played silly buggers, and your cash has been won by innocent parties, then I think you are probably stuffed

do you use a router supplied by your isp?...do they upgrade the firmware when it needs upgrading?

have you veer logged on via public wifi?...ie in a coffee shop for instance.

if you say yes to this then your at risk.
