There is a young German engineer at the company I used to work for (I'm retired now), who is there just for a couple of months and he was telling me that following the demolition of the wall 30 years ago, the German government spent the next 25 years pouring money into the area to upgrade and modernise. There are now modern state of the art companies that have moved into the eastern section and modern housing which is attracting a movement of people into that area.

Apparently, the problem of this workforce drain to the east is so great that they are getting worried about workers leaving companies in the Western section and moving east due to low rents and well paid jobs waiting for them.

The title is a bit flippant I admit, but it does highlight a problem that the Germans are experiencing at the moment.

Why's it a problem? It's one Germany, one Berlin. As in every major city there will be periods when certain areas and postcodes become "trendy" or hotspots for certain industries and skills. It's like the residents of Fleet Street threatening to build a wall when the press started moving to Wapping.

I have a better solution. Why not just make two countries? East Germany and West Germany? Make people speak Mandarin in one and Korean in the other. Ban german. Then tell me how many want to move to East Germany. Dont waste money building a wall.
