I've often wondered if it's really necessary to log out of websites such as banking/bookies websites where one has accounts (this website for example). What's wrong with just closing your browser? Sometimes logging out can take quite some time, whereas closing your browser is instant. Is it something to do with security? How can it be less secure closing the browser as opposed to logging out from a website each time?

If you are using Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge, it appears logging out does nothing much at all....

I hear you moke, however.

You can log out any time you like.
But you can never leave!

Charlie - thanks for that link. Makes interesting reading. I think he's saying in a very roundabout way, that there could be security issues if one just closes the browser without logging out first.

I have set up IE to clear all data and cookies on exit, which is what that article recommends.

So I'll probably play safe and always log out first before closing IE.

If you are using IE or Edge try this.....log out from Betfair then log in again using any password at all....see if it lets you login...

You are fine just closing the browser. But dont do that with banking accounts.

A virus will get you no matter what. It will wait till you open the browser again and login to the online banking. Viruses are intelligent.

I consider myself an informed internet surfer(being a web-developer myself). I use pirated windows. Never log out anywhere, except online banking. I have only been hit once by a serious virus(that made me send a 1000 euro to Vodafone). Interestingly, that was the 'only time' in my life I have used original windows from Microsoft. I can also proudly say I have never used anti-viruses either, free or paid. NEVER!

My advice: Be careful whenever you are on foreign/unknown websites(especially when looking for a free software, song, game etc). A good surfing style/habit will save you. Otherwise now and then viruses will get you. And closing your browser or logging out wont save you because a good virus will cater for both.
