The NHS should advertise this... Ever wondered why women live longer that men. One theory is the Ferritin Level of your blood. It's the iron content. Too little and you are anemic, too much you tip over to ill health too, as Iron overload damages your organs. Women have monthly bleeding called 'the curse' , not such a curse as the blood letting may stop them getting an iron build up. Giving a pint takes out a large amount of iron that needs to be put back into the blood by the organs. Ferritin iron levels over 150 is an indicator of dangerous iron. chelation therapy (blood out) is a recognized way of handling iron overload.
If you eat meat everyday, you are probably iron overloaded.
At the donor centre on Piccadilly approach in the 90s they used to provide Crawfords Pink Wafers and tea made in a pot. Yummy. It's a bourbon and low quality tea. I've had better tea in a bookies in the last few years. Details like this matter. That and donor sessions always running half an hour late are a turn-off.
You might live longer being a donor but it's the quality of life that matters.

went last month - kit kats, choco wafers, tunnocks tea cakes, digestives, cheese cream crackers, loads. Coffee, tea, orange.
you can benefit and others benefit for getting the blood. only a complete bozo would see a negative here?
if you are a bleeder don't go... the new moto of the blood transfusion service?

The answer is yes, donating is connected to an extension of your life. The study is on Italian donors though and I bet they got a nice garibaldi biscuit or a choc liebniz afterwards.

Just the thought of it leaves me light headed. I'm convinced I feel differently after even having a blood test and the thought of not having enough blood makes my legs wobble.
Plus they really need to work out a better way than rupturing an artery with a metal object that makes you aware of the process as its being dragged back out.

Trying having an angiogram dusty, via the groin; you're awake throughout as they try to fit (metal) stents into your heart arteries; fascinating watch though.

some heavy 5hit goes on in life thats for sure and Ive been very lucky up till now.
I once saw an operation on a brain tumor patient who had to be conscious while it was being done.

With regards to blood I've given it around 10 times until advised I can no longer do so due to prescription drugs. I'm quite common too (A+) and have always been advised that it is common blood they seek the most; hence the above comment.

Shhh - it's a bible quote - sneaked it in.... Foinavon agreed. Perry Mason would be so proud of me.
Yes, realised that Zorro. Stone-age man would have noticed that cutting arteries allowing the blood to flow out led to death although he would not have understood why. Hence the quote in the bible of an observed fact.

to think that all those old stories about blood letting by primitive doctors in the past actually has a grain of truth in it. They should gauge if you give blood on your iron count. Because women are at risk of anemia if their levels are too low. they do a serum iron test when you give blood, but it might not be ideal. l looked at symptoms of low iron... Hair loss is one of them? low ability to heal. It's a balancing act - a safe range between 100-200. eating meat seems to drive iron up. Among other iron rich foods.
I think they did a study a few years ago about young people's blood being transfused into old people to give them a boost. Taking out blood means the body has to produce new fresh red gravy.

they got a nice passage about molds too. along with eating shellfish and pork. Pork being full of parasites? of course modern farming has made pork safe. Shellfish needs to be flushed for days to clean it of bacteria. Heston Blum' knows this stuff is key.

Funny you should say that (about old people) zorro. I lost my old man earlier this year but leading up to that loss he was getting quite ill where it was getting extremely difficult to converse with him. As he deteriorated he had to undergo a hernia operation where a transfusion was needed. Before I knew it I had the old man back again; it was almost (but not quite) a complete recovery and talking as if he'd never had trouble before. Sadly this didn't last long (a week or so, give or take) but it did literally give him a new lease of life and it was the last time we ever had a truly great conversation again.
Leading on... apparently, I've read, that some singers have a transfusion (private) before they go on stage/tour to put them in the best possible shape.
In other words, your final point on your 7:20 post yesterday does seem to bear some truth to it.

I'll be giving blood in a couple of days.I've only done it twice before.A couple of years ago tried to give some but the blood was rejected because it didn't contain enough iron.I'll make sure it will be OK this time by eating some eggs,fish,etc..

it's not so simple to take on iron or lose it. it's a very gradual process. So I'm doubtful your iron levels will be much different? even taking out a pint in my high level will only drop me a few percent. But if I donate every two months? it might.
Athletes have had accusations of blood doping. to boost energy levels.

Tried to give blood this morning but it was a no,no because my reading on the HemoCue machine was 133 and it needed to be 135 or above.Never mind I'll try again in 3 months.I know why my reading was low it's because ive not eat meat for 4 or 5 months.

Before today i wouldn't have had a clue about what a HemoCue machine was either. It's something that measures your haemoglobin which is a protein found in the red blood cells...I'm glad I went along anyway the nurse who attended to me,as it where, was lovely.

Culvin , why are you trying to raise your iron levels. your 133 mark sounds good to me. I was 159 in serum iron and i'm told.. i'm 310 in ferritin level? I'm trying to get down to your level.

i watched that food program on ch4 fridays were they look at all the foods. anyway... they looked at iron in cornflakes. turns out they actually take metal grind it to a powder and add it to cornflakes to get the iron content in it. they set up a huge magnet to make their point and lifted the cornflakes individually with the magnet. this is FKed up - as iron should be absorbed by the plant as it's growing. micro mineral absorption is the only way for us to absorb minerals properly. Ten years ago they did a farming piece on STV news about a farmer who was taking sandstone and crushing it down to dust and plowing it into his fields before planting potatoes. This produced massive potatoes, with a high mineral content. Our food today is very low in minerals. It's not the same food we had a century ago. It's being urged on by synthetic routes and looks great but it's style over substance. I have been buying Sweet potatoes(FKin hate the taste) from EGYPT, because i figure they might be grown in sand? I can't confirm this but I try to get veg with mineral content.

A few decades ago sheep in part of New Zealand were going down due to bush sickness
It turned out to be cobalt deficiency, but a lot of stock died, and a lot of scientists pulled their hair out following false theories about the cause. . http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/map/17533/cobalt-deficient-areas
It's incredible that not getting a tiny amount of a mineral can kill you eventually. The sea has traces of all minerals so it's worth eating a portion of fish a month and a bit of that seaweed at Chinese restaurants. Good luck next time Culvin. It's quite a satisfying feeling to pass the iron test.

Thank you zorrostrikes, mate for all the info you post here about health,food,etc,..I think you definitely know your stuff. To answer the question about why I was trying to increase my iron levels by eating eggs, spinach, etc ive only been doing that recently because I know by not eating meat my iron levels are likely going to be on the low side which would make my decision to visit the donor centre unproductive because the blood would not be accepted with a low iron reading.Regarding the Haemoglobin measurement of 133,all I can say about that is that the nurse informed me that the Hb reading needed to be 135 or above...I was a little disappointed not to be able to give blood but I soon perked up because after leaving the donor centre i made my way to Hope Street and enjoyed a wonderful pint of Guinness in one of Liverpools best pubs,The Casa.

I switched to Himalayan sea salt - it has over 80 minerals in it. seemingly only one country has instituted a medical imitative regarding this salt. It reduces chances of thyroid conditions. Guess the country? answer below. iodine on salt.
The table salt we use is very corrosive in action. I use it to kill insects.
