Coronation Street star Marc Anwar has been sacked from the soap for alleged "racially offensive" tweets about Indian people.

The Pakistan-born actor, who joined the show in 2014 to play the role of  Sharif Nazir, was dismissed after ITV was alerted to the posts by the Sunday Mirror.

The alleged tweets from Anwar's protected account, published by the newspaper, were critical of India over the disputed Kashmir region and called on Pakistani actors to stop working in the country.

The tweets also referred to Indian people as "b*******" and "p***-drinking c****".

His comments come amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan over the divided Himalayan territory, following deadly attacks by militants.

ITV said in a statement: "We are deeply shocked by the entirely unacceptable, racially offensive comments made on Twitter by Marc Anwar.

"We have talked to Marc and, as a consequence of his comments, he will not be returning to Coronation Street with immediate effect."

He's clearly a proud Pak and a decent actor ( verbal ). As a careers adviser, I believe a call centre job dealing with benefit claimants for Oldham council would match his attributes.

blessing in disguise tbf. He was just about to buy one of Pat Phelan's flats.

Will the police get involved with this racist attack or do you have to be non Islamic for that to occur?
Report alun2005 • September 25, 2016 10:51 AM BST
The reported comments appear to be far worse than those which saw Paul Gascoigne being sent to trial and pleading guilty to 'racially aggravated abuse'.

There is a lot of feeling between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir region...

I can't even see the Guardian types denying this is racism tbh. Anyone here who objects to overcrowding is racist these days.

If I am not banned for saying so, it strikes me that the people of India and Pakistan are of similar racial heritage

The difference is their religion..

I hope that does offend anyone

I agree the jokes were offensive ebul, but if someone on a bus gets prosecuted for mindless ranting at a foreigner, then this man must be prosecuted too, modern rules and all that.

We put a lot on words now, and we don't look for their context or the meaning behind them

Does making sure Indians and Pakistanis don't say bad words to each other, reflect the true situation

When India and Pakistan were created up to a million people died which was appalling

Words do not kill anyone
