The inflation basket does not contain travel tickets, house prices, or anything that might rise in value. If it did, we would make Zimbabwe look well-managed.

Rents are included and there is pressure on the ONS to include costs associated with owning and maintaining a home.

Train and bus fares are included.

Bloody hell, the women I keep in my sex dungeon will be livid if they read those figures!

if inflation for one year is 5% and then inflation for 2nd year is 5%.
then inflation for 2nd year is not 5%, it is 10%
they don`t calculate it way, why not?

LFC - the figure is the annual change.

There is an index though: Jan 1987 = 100; Aug 2016 = 264.4 (Aug 2014 = 257.0)

yes so the figure is meaningless in the real world, this might explain why every one of us have ancestors stretching back, well for ever actually...and no money, where has it all gone?

Not sure what you mean by this.

I wouldn't say the figure is meaningless.  A "basket" of goods and services which cost 259.8 in Aug 2015 cost 264.4 in Aug 2016. The price has increased by 1.8%

Are women entitled to same minimum wages as men?

yes that`s what i mean, the price has increased by 1.8% but that is 1.8% on a previous 1.8%.
it is posssible for a government to say in its last yearin office that inflation is 2%...but it maynot be it may be 10% in reality. this would be the true inflation rate that they have achieved over a term
this would be their record and this is the figure they shoiuld quote if it is to mean anything.

Btw, the figures I've used are RPI.  CPI rate currently 0.6%.

A low rate of inflation is no bad thing; it's actually desirable. The government target is 2% which doesn't mean it's even better to have 1% or 0.75%.

rent has made a massive difference since those days ,doubled in most cases

CPI includes rent.

Current CPI 100.9; Aug 2006 80.4

Year on year is the only sensible measure.
Easy then to consider it against any increase in earnings.
I get 3% minimum increase each year on my private pension so easy to balance against inflation.
