Hello, as a lot of you know my lad has been through a fair amount of surgeries which inevitably leave scarring. He is only 6 right now so I don't think  (at least I hope not) that he is self conscious of how the scars look. I am looking ahead I suppose to when he gets older. We all know that kids can be very cruel. Obviously, it is my attention to build his self confidence as much as I can and when he has questions about the scars to tell him honest answers. This is probably a mad idea, but I have been semi seriously considering getting a tattoo on my chest to copy his open heart surgery zip like scar. Am I mad? Laugh

Anyway, I'd love to hear chit chats serious and not to serious answers to helping with this topic. Happy

Tell him the truth

Tell him it makes him look interesting, how many other kids have scars like that?

You could tell him he was vampire they drove a stake through his heart and put in a human oneWink

I would not bother with the tattoo myself

As long as you love him that is all that matters.

Some interesting reading here, if you haven't found it already.

I wouldn't have a tattoo if I were you, Hank.

Hanks Jnr will probably grow up thinking his scars are no big deal but seeing your tatoo all the time will just keep reminding him of his scars. If you see what I mean.

I'm sure Hank Jnr will be fine Love

because of his young age will they not fade as he gets older?

I would think they will heal better than they would with an adult, also kids probably think scars are cool.

I had an "L" shaped one about 2" x 2" on my knee when I was 9 and you cannot see it now, my Grandma always said it would fade because of my age.

I don't know tbh BB. He is due another one within the next year, so that would be 3 open heart surgeries and quite a scar build up I guess. Ebulgery - I like the vamp story lol. MD you're probably right - just thought of it as a show of solidarity - but yes I could see how it could end up drawing more attention to the scars. I am actually more concerned about the scar where the trach was, but I believe they can do some nice work on those now. Thanks as always for the responses.

Don't get a tattoo, Hank. Apart from all tattoos looking stupid, you would be making a big deal out of something that's over now.

When other kids ask about his scar he can say: "That's where the doctors cut me open, lifted my heart up a bit then cut it open too so they could fix it. When they'd finished fixing it, they sewed me back up."

When they say: "Cool!" and "Did it hurt?" he can just put on a brave face and smile. He'll be a hero!

I wouldn't panic Hank, cross the bridge if you come to it. The surgeons these days are pretty conscious on the scarring effects, I had to have my throat cut into a few years ago and they did it on one of the natural creases and you can only tell if you look really close. I bet that they will have thought of that when they did juniors trach.

Hope the boy gets through it Hank. Must be terrible for you.

Don't get a tattoo and tell him to rise above any grief. I can't imagine how brave he must be, stupid people won't really upset him, and they will be in the smallest of minorities anyway.

Good luck man
