Recently i've been at my doctor's surgery and they have a sign on the wall - '56' missed appointments this month.
My appointment was for 10.15 and i did not see the doctor till 10.45, i got there twenty minutes early so I waited 50 minutes to see the doctor for ten minutes. You have to spew out what's wrong with you with a ten minute sand scale running down. So the doctor never gets a chance at getting at the root of your problem?

But if I did not show up - i know for a fact my doctor would immediately move on to the next punter. If i showed up late by five minutes I might be wedged in after that punter that took my place. It's just a queue. the doctor does not take a ten minute break in my appointment time... this is just anti NHS propaganda. PAY a £10 fee bull.
will people stop talking crap about the NHS.

Fair enough but if they don'tsee you at the time of the appointment then they should pay fairs fair.

it would be worth making a doctor's appointment to get a pay out?

Of course, you should pay a fine for missing the appointment.

The problem is people don't appreciate anything that is free.

I vote for pay up if you miss your appointment.

It certainly is not free. We pay a fortune in national insurance and a plethora of other taxes.
We work around for half the year paying tax!

Of course its free - free at the point of use.

You mention paying taxes.

Clearly, you get it whether you pay taxes or not.

Suppose you tried to get an appointment today but couldn't, and later discover that a dozen people who had appts didn't show, meaning you COULD have had one. Would that change your thinking?
Put it another way, how much do you think it would cost you for a GP appointment in say, the USA? If I was you, I'd shut up and think myself lucky.

Virtually everyone pays taxes of some sort.
Income tax, national insurance, VAT, Excise duties on alcohol, tobacco.
Corporation tax, Stamp duty, Car tax, Insurance tax, death tax .......

Cost for a missed GP appointment is zero. As zorrostrikes says in OP, it just means the next patient is seen earlier (or not quite as late) but a missed appointment for a minor operation, say, is bad.

It looks like most missed appointments are down to the mentally ill, drug users and other patients with so-called chaotic lifestyles so it is not obvious that fines or anything else would make much of a difference.

Imo they should approach the problem from the other end and reform the appointments system. For a start, is one even needed? Could GPs function more like A&E where you just turn up? Could it be made easier to cancel appointments (or postpone them) online?

Disappointed that zorro went to a gp without giving chitchat first crack at a diagnosis.Poor show.

Ok.  The next patient is seen if they are waiting.
If the doctor had 40 patients scheduled and 10 turned up then it doesn't matter?

Of course it doesn't matter if you miss an appointment - TO YOU.

No argument - if someone misses an appointment without giving notice, they must pay a fine before another appointment will be entertained.

NHS staff are paid to deal with patients not waste time running surgeries below capacity.

Would be a very nice little earner for GPs. Let me guess, the BMA are all for it?

Wouldn't be a nice little earner at all.
People would simply pick up the phone and cancel their appointments if they couldn't make it.

A system of fines would make the irresponsible do what the responsible do anyway.

It's an unworkable idea in practice, that achieves almost nothing and creates loads of problems.

By:

There would hardly be any fines handed out.

Most people would simply pick up the phone and cancel their appointment if they weren't going to turn up.
By:
CLYDEBANK29
When: 09 Sep 16 21:55
Most people who don't turn up will have forgotten, got the time wrong, or something similar so they won't be phoning up to cancel
By:
Dr Crippen
When: 09 Sep 16 21:56
The threat of a fine would concentrate their minds.

When: 09 Sep 16 22:26
Well CLYDEBANK29, I'm sure that if they ever implement it they'll make allowances for people who have been diagnosed with any complaint that includes forgetfulness.

They can fine their carers instead.
