The Chit Chat clinic is requested to solve a medical problem that has puzzled doctors for nearly a year.

I suffer from post-nasal drip. (The snot runs into my throat instead of onto my upper lip.)

Diagnosis 1 (by a doctor): Hay fever. Take these pills. (It was Christmas, they even had a tree up in the surgery.) Pills didn't work.

Diagnosis 2 (by another doctor): Allergic rhinitis caused by air pollution. Squirt this steroid spray up your nose twice a day until it gets better. It didn't get better and I felt dizzy.

Diagnosis 3 (by a doctor's receptionist): Your nose is dirty on the inside. You must wash it out. In my country we use a neti-pot for this very purpose. Maybe a chemist will sell you one. Good luck and please do not sniffle in here. There are sick people, you know.

Diagnosis 4 (by a chemist): Here ya go, fella. Try this stuff. It's only sterile seawater. It doesn't have steroids in it so you can squirt it up your hooter whenever you want.

Diagnosis 5 (by a barmaid): Ooh! Your nose is bleeding!

Doctor's are crap when it comes to noses from prior experience, see a specialist.  Have you been checked for polyps? Deviated septum? Bone abnormalities?  When I convinced my doctor I wanted to see a specialist they found I had the lot and had to have surgery (my symptons were a bit more severe).  Do you get sinus problems? Head/face aches? Infections?

I hope you're feeling better now.

I haven't been checked for anything except a couple of GPs have shone a torch up my nostrils to see if my eyes lit up. The only symptoms are pains around the cheekbones and persistently snorting so that I can breathe. It's very embarrassing.

How do you get hold of a specialist?

Cheekbone pains sounds like you may have something going on with your maxillary sinuses.  I had repeated infections, the doctors just threw antibiotics at me, they didn't even recognise a sinus infection, it came up on a Dentist x-ray.  I just told the Doctor I wanted to go to hospital as it wasn't getting any better after several months.

Thanks for the info. I'll make an appointment to see the quack then. If I phone tomorrow, I should get in by Guy Fawkes'.

Pain in the cheekbones? Sinus trouble perhaps.
Mometasone Furoate might help stop the running.

Any eye or ear problems?

garlic and vit c.

there is a guy on youtube dr berg that shows you how to
introduce garlic water into your nose.

also vit c - years ago I had a hay fever condition. I sneezed constantly and nose dripped like i had a cold for hours. I took contact 400 for a while but it never went away with that, it just controlled it, i started on excessive amounts of vit c and it cleared up after a month.

i would try vit c before attempting the garlic thing, i've never
tried it and it seems a bit extreme.

sources of pure vit c - lemon juice, apple cider vinegar - one capful per glass of water.

I've suffered with this for as long as I can remember.

It has been put down as a "Deviated Septum",as a legacy for a big accident in the school gym.

It is always uncomfortable trying, at least, to pull it down and swallow!

It can be quite distressing in bed, feeling that I can't swallow, and how fantastic must life be without this all the time!

I've tried all manner of sprays, and nasal irrigation, with previously boiled water and salt, but haven't found anything that works.

Apparently we can produce more than half a litre of this stuff!

I've had it as well and two things works amazingly well here.

First is using a curved tip syringe to squirt nasal solution into each nostril. You make this up with water, salt and bica soda. The solution and instructions are on the NHS website. It was the hospital who gave me the syringe and solution after a trip to the e.n.t clinic
Do this twice a day for a week and it's 99% to work wonders.

The 2nd is coconut oil pulling. Plenty sites on line showing the benefits and how to do this.

The above 2 really work wonders.

Tried the oil pulling - for dental reasons.

I heard iodine dilution is good for your gums stops gum disease?

Yes, I forgot to mention sinus rinsing, I'd recommend the Neilmed bottle (google it, don't get the electric ones, just the bottle, it says replace every 90 days but that's just sales bs I've had mine years) you can get ready prepared sachets to use with it (I use them because I'm too lazy and buy them in bulk).  Rinsing the sinuses is very refreshing as well as clearing out a lot of the gunk, the bottle is the best way to do it because of the volume of solution.

You can watch a video under the photo of the specialist I see.  http://www.spirehealthcare.com/norwich/facilities-treatments-and-consultants...

Thanks for all the advice. I've been taking vitamin C and vitamin D for years.

I phoned the doc's this morning and between snorts asked for an appointment with a view to getting seen by a specialist. I'll be seeing the doc at the end of next month but the receptionist has no idea when, if ever, I'll see a specialist.

In the meantime, I bought some more of that seawater spray. It's called Sterimar. I don't fancy putting tapwater up my nose even if it is boiled. The water supply round here isn't fit to flush the bog with.

This time the chemist also recommended a clean pillowcase everynight and never to wash pillowcases, sheets and duvet covers with detergents. So if you get a rancid whiff off my future posts, blame the chemist.

I have Nasal polyps ,when I lived in the City it was murder they used to swell up all the time infections the Lot ,I live in the country now I have not had a problem with them in 2 years Plain They are still there but very small ,air pollution a major factor in nasal problems imo ..
Report Ramruma September 7, 2016 12:40 PM BST
Mine was caused by a lung infection, which was picked up by a chest x-ray and cured by extra-strong antibiotics (after they'd ruled out cancer).
