I was once told that Dahl wanted Jack from On the Buses to play Willy Wonka in the original movie but the film company over-ruled him and went with Wilder.

Probably a wise move.

Is this the fella who employed all those illegal immigrants, committed several health and safety violations and then tried to claim his factory was being run by a little kid and his senile old Grandpa Confused

Wasn't particularly prolific but had a very impressive strike rate (particularly in partnership with Mel Brooks)

Young Frankenstein (it's pronounced Frankensteen), Blazing Saddles and the Producers are all classics.

His Wonka was also very good, made to look even better after Burton and Depp butchered it.

Stories also paint the picture of an all round good egg and kind man.
